O ne o f the two, Becky Dudney, is a Tide VII and English Language D e velopm ent teacher at the high school. Dudney teaches the Cul tures o f Warm Springs class at MHS. Dudney has another year left on her contract; so the decision not to extend her contract would take effect after the 2012-13 school year. The school super intended and board can recon sider the m atter between now and that time. T he school d istrict bo ard evaluated th e m a tte r at the March 12 board meeting. They m et for a time in executive ses sion, as required by personnel procedure. During the meeting before and after executive ses sion, several people spoke on be half o f Dudney and her class. The Let’s Talk Diversity Coalition held an open house in Madras last week. About 130 people, including members from Warm Springs, attended. The goal of the coalition, which recently received a $130,000 grant, is to improve health and equity in the community. S u p p a h sa id th a t, as a youth, he may have quit school had he n o t had a teacher like Dudney. “I probably w ouldn’t have made it, because there are many teachers who are not sensitive to the needs o f the First Ameri cans,” he said. H e was lucky, he said, to have had a teacher “who taught me lessons that I ’m still working on today.” R hoan said D udney’s class gives some Warm Springs stu dents a reason for continuing with school. She brings in speak ers on fishing, hunting and tra dition, he said, “and the students get support from her to stay in school.” T h e C u ltu re o f W arm Springs class features lessons on Native languages, first foods and o th e r trad itio n s. S ta ff from tribal Culture and Heritage are regular guest speakers. There’s a Strength Train ing Class today at 5:30 at the Community Center. It’s a time for fami lies to go into children’s class rooms and participate in the online programs they use in Language Arts and Math. A Simnasho Community Garden W orkshop will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Simnasho Church/Community Center - next to the old school. The workshop will cover Gar den Irrigation. The Je ffe rs o n C o u nty Middle School Science Fair will be open to the public from 6-8 p.m. They will have a free cookie and pie social, a few hundred science projects to view and a catapult competi tion. Saturday, March 24 The 25th Annual BAAD - Basketball Against Alcohol and Drugs - Tournament is March 24-30 at the Nixyaawii Community School Gym. Saturday, will feature speakers, ceremonies, a talk ing circle, sweat lodge, silent auction and raffle. Warm Springs Spring Term GED classes will begin the week of April 2. Basic Read ing and Writing will be Tues days from 9 to noon and Ba sic Math Thursdays from 9 to noon. Students need to attend class for registration and ori entation the first 2 weeks of the term.
