Spilyay T ym oo, V W ro Springs, O regon February 8, 2012 Award recognizes tribal WIC program The Tribal WIC Program this week will receive a Breast-feed ing Performance Award that in cludes additional funding for breastfeeding projects in the county. The award will be pre sented this Friday, Feb. 10. Roopa Puri, WIC coordina tor, says, “The WIC Program plans to use the additional fund ing to update our educational materials for our patients and staff as well as to purchase more breastfeeding supplies. ” This Tribal WIC award is part o f the B reastfeeding P erfo r mance Bonus awarded to the Oregon Nutrition and Screen ing Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). O regon is one o f six WIC agencies nationw ide th a t re ceived an aw ard for highest breastfeeding rates for Fiscal Year 2011. “ O re g o n W IC ’s high breastfeeding rates are really a reflection o f the efforts that local agency staff make every day w o rk in g directly w ith breastfeeding mothers and ba b ies,” em p h asized Sue W oodbury, the O regon State WIC director. “We are giving the Tribal WIC Program bonus funding and a Certificate o f Recognition for their ongoing efforts to sup port breastfeeding families.” This is the first time the bo nus awards focused on the num ber o f WIC m others who ex clusively breastfed their babies for six months. “Exclusive b reastfeeding” means only breast milk (no for mula, water or other foods) are given for the first six months. This has been a recommenda tion from the American Acad emy o f Pediatrics since 1997. The longer a mother exclusively b re a stfe e d s h e r child, th e greater the positive health im pact for both mother and baby. Research shows giving for mula to breastfed babies under mines breastfeeding by decfeas- ing a mother’s milk production and does n ot actually solve most breastfeeding concerns. Tashina Smith, our local WIC breastfeeding m other, reports WIC was helpful to her by all the support she received to con tinue breastfeeding exclusively Happy Valentines!
