r n Page 6 May 4, 2011 Spilyay Tyrooo, Warm Springs, Oregon Breakaway roper to compete at state Charm aine B illy of Warm Springs will compete this month in the O regon High School Equestrian Team Cham pion ship, to be held at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds. The cham pionship happens T hursday through Sunday, May 19-22. Charmaine qualified in the breakaway roping division in April by winning the Oregon High School Equestrian Team (OHSET) district competition. That event was also held at the D esch u tes C o u n ty F a ir grounds. Charmaine, a junior at Ma dras High School, has been breakaway roping since she was about 12, said her mother Ada Billy. She placed in the OHSET district competition last year, and this year took the breakaway district gold medal. Her trainer is Tanya Cloutier. OHSET, estab lish ed in 1993, is the statewide organiza tion dedicated to promoting and organizing equestrian competi tion in high school athletic or activity programs. A documentary film fea turing Shoni Schimmel will premier later this month at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. The film is expected to be shown later in Portland. A tra ile r for the film states: “Shoni Schim m el, a Umatilla Indian and one of the best high school basket ball players in the country, dream s o f being the first from her tribe to get a col lege scholarship. The OHSET goals are to encourage team play, peer ac ceptance, good horsemanship and to have cooperative adult supervised leadership for all stu- dents in grades 9 through 12. G o lf tourney fo r girls squad Kah-Nee-Ta will host a golf tourney fundraiser to benefit the Madras High School girls bas ketball team. The four-person scramble is set for Sunday, May 22. Two extra cash kp holes $10 Workshop on range restoration: Managing invasive species OSU Extension will present a range restoration workshop from 9 a.m. till noon on Wednes day, May 18 at High Lookee Lodge. Lunch will be served^at noon. Short and long term planning for weedy areas can be a com plicated task, especially if res toration methods require a sub stantial investment of time and money. In this workshop, we will ex plore a more holistic way to plan for restoration of weedy areas that involves utilizing resources while restoring land in a cost effective manner. We will discuss a range as sessm ent tool, a ranch case study, and information on how weedy species can be grazed sea sonally, with the goal of restor ing the range to a healthier con dition.
