April 21, 2010 Spilyay Tymoo, Warm Springs, Oregon P age 2 Suppah chosen for leadership assembly B y D u ra n B o b b Spilyay Tymoo Jaylyn Suppah has been se lected as a delegate to the 2010 Rural Youth Convening of the N ational Rural-Assembly in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Suppah is one of 53 young people chosen from a nation wide nominations process. As sembly participants were se lected on the basis o f leader ship, community involvement, and p ersonal in te rests and achievement. Suppah was nominated to be part of the youth delegation by W ork F orce D evelopm ent (WEDD). “I ’m thankful for this re sponsibility and challenge,” Suppah said. “It will be a great opportunity for me to explore and learn new ideas and bring them back to our reservation. I’m hoping to bring back new ideas and possibly implement some of them in our commu nity. Also, to learn more about myself and how to be an ef- Jaylyn Suppah fectiye young leader to make a difference any way that I can.” D elegates w ere selected thro u g h a very com petitive nominations process. Those selected were between the ages 18-25 who live in rural communities, said Peter Morris o f the National Congress for American Indians, and member o f the Youth Assembly organi zation committee. “They represent the geo graphic, racial and ethnic diver sity o f rural America and the nation as a whole.” The National Rural Assem bly provides a forum for rural young people to discuss issues that are critical to their lives and communities, such as job cre ation, education, culture and conserving natural resources. The assembly includes more than 500 regional and national organizations based in 47 states and the District o f Columbia. The stated goal o f the assembly is to make the country stronger by improving the outlook for rural communities. “I believe I can make a dif ference,” Suppah said, “and this conference can prepare and educate me on issues that affect not only our community, but others as well. It will give me the opportunity to hear from other young people the chal lenges they face in their com munities and how they are .try ing to make a difference.” The conference will be held this Thursday through Sunday, April 22-25. All funds raised will benefit services provided to newly diagnosed cancer, survivors. These funds help to pay expenses not covered by public or private insur ance. Learn how to be a lifeguard K ah-N ee-Ta H igh D esert Resort and Casino will be the location for Red Cross-certified lifeguard and CPR training. Class dates are April 24-25, May 1,2 and 8. Arrive at 9 a.m. on April 24 to begin training. The class re quires a minimum 32 hours of training time. In this course you will learn about the duties and responsi bilities o f a lifeguard and how to carry them out in a profes sional manner. You will also learn a number o f life guarding tech niques, such as how to use sur veillance techniques, how to use rescue equipment to help rescue a distress swimmer, an active drowning victim and a passive drowning victim, and how to manage a suspected spinal injury victim. Cost o f the class is $150 per person, and includes materials and Red Cross certification for the professional rescuer. Prerequisites: Must be age 15 or older on or before the fi nal scheduled session o f this life guard course. Participant must complete the following: Swim 300 yards consistently using front crawl 100 yards, breaststroke 100 yards, and 100 yards fro n t crawl o r b reast stroke in that order. Swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10- pound brick from a depth o f 7-10 feet and swim back to start ing point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps within one minute, 40 seconds. Chemawa hosting leadership, athletic academy Chemawa Indian School will host a Native Youth Leadership and Athletic Academy at the school on June 28-July 1. ( School district budget committee meeting May 4 A public meeting o f the B udget C om m ittee o f Jefferson County School Dis trict 509-J to discuss the bud get for fiscal year July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011, will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday May 4 in the Support Ser vices Building, 445 SE Buff St., Madras. The committee will receive the budget message and docu ment o f the district.
