O ne o f my favorite movies depicts a senator w ho is the co founder for the C oahtion for M oral O rder. His co-founder is eventuaUy found deceased in an awkward situation, one that is quite im m oral in som e eyes. H ow w ould we prevent that from happening w ith a Code o f Ethics Committee? H ow m uch pow er w ould we give this com mittee? W ho w ould the com m it tee answer to w hen they broke their ow n rules? W hose idea o f right and w rong would the com-' mittee foUow? These are just som e o f the questions that w ent through my own m ind whUe filling out this survey. These are questions that made m e grateful that I fell in love w ith w riting, rath er than poEtics. A t least in writing, we have a nifty Ettle backspace button. Catherine Katchia, Agency D istrict candidate, T ul-pah’ — Chit-si-ak. Canoe blessing N iix Micqi! I w ould like to com m ent on the canoe blessing ceremony that was held on M arch 27. My N am e is Paula (Smith) Kalama and I am honored to be a part o f the planning com m it tee for the N ’chi W anapam Ca noe, and I also have a son, D o u glas Brisbois, as one o f the puU- ers on the canoes for the short am ount o f time that we had to prepare for the blessing. I feel it w ent very weU. AU those that were involved in the planning came together weU. This was truly a historical event for our tribe because we are River People and canoes were used by our ancestors. T he canoe blessing made me feel p ro u d o f o u r tribe. I am happy that this tradition is com ing back to our people. I have been to a few canoe journeys and they are so neat! T here is a unity betw een aU o f the canoe famiEes, sharing songs and dances w ith each o ther and feeEng the spirituaEty am ongst the people brings joy to hearts! AU o f the visiting canoe fami Ees that were able to come w it ness our canoe blessing had a w o nderful tim e and had very g o o d , en co u rag in g w o rd s to share. We are a young canoe famUy and stiU have a lo t to learn but blessed in having oth er canoe famiEes wiUing to take us under their wing and help get us started in participating in future canoe journeys. W.S. jail To the C onfederated Tribes o f W arm Springs, I sincerely regret the mistakes I h av e m ad e. I k n o w th e re needs to be consequences for crim e an d ev ery b o d y m akes m istakes. R ig h t n o w w e are p laced in th e W arm Springs Correctional FaciEty th at lacks educational program s, a toxic m ental environm ent, and poor m ental and physical health care. W hen people are sentenced to one, two o r three years it only makes our problem s w orse and makes us m ore Ekely to get into w orse trouble. My entire time in jaU, there was no schooling, period. Thank G o d for church services. They are devoted to us. Also, thank Victims o f Crime Services for the few times they com e in for us. A fte r a w hile you start to a d a p t to all th e fru s tra tio n , stress, depression and negativ ity, as if it were a norm al way o f Efe. A n d in the end, w hen you get released, your state o f m ind in jaU fbUows you, which will only lead to m ore violence and crime. T he lack o f educa tion programs, negative environ m ent, boredom and p o o r m en tal and physical health care make jaU the wrong place to spend one, two o r three years.
