Spilygy Tyrnoo, Warm Springs, Oregon Student earns summer abroad High school student Chance McConville will be traveling to Europe in the summer o f 2010, as a student am bassador with the People to People program. C harice was selected as a People to People am bassador because o f outstanding achieve ments at school, in particular for h e r scores o n th e SAT an d PSAT. T he goal o f the People to People program , w hich Pres. Eisenhower established in 1956, is as follows: “We bridge cultural and p o litical borders through education and exchange, making the world a better place for future genera tions.” Participation in the program “benefits the students by open ing their eyes to the world, sets them apart on college applica- Charice McConville tions and in consideration for other honors, and returns a child who is m ore confident and ea ger to continue learning.” During the summer, Charice will travel and study in England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. Some think about losing weight, som e w ould like to exercise more, and some w ant to spend more time with family. H owever, one o f the m ost popular resolutions is to quit smoking or chewing tobacco. With the increasing prices o f tobacco products, it’s no won der more and m ore people are thinking about quitting. The am ount o f money spent p e r y ear fo r a p e rs o n w h o smokes a $5.50 pack o f ciga rettes a day is $2,008. I f that person wanted to quit th ro u g h th e W arm S p rin g s Health and Wellness Center, the cost to him would be zero dol lars a year. T h a t m ean s th a t p e rs o n would have m ore than $2,000 extra dollars in their pocket each year by being tobacco free. I f you decide to quit and seek help through the use o f some form o f tobacco cessation p ro d u ct and counseling, you have a seven times better o f a chance quitting smoking than if you did it by yourself without any tobacco cessation products. Luckily, there’s a quick and easy way to sign up for a tobacco cessation program that offers counseling and medications in one stop. T he Y outh Challenge p ro gram is a statewide alternative high school. Lauren graduated o n D ec. 16. T he graduation cerem ony w as h e ld a t th e D e sc h u te s C o u n ty F a irg ro u n d s in Redm ond. G raduation shows completion o f the five-month residential phase o f the p ro gram. During the program, cadets earn th eir diplom a, G E D or enough credits to re-enter high school and graduate with their classes. The OYCP program is cost- free to cadets and their families and has successfully graduated more than 3,900 cadets since its inception in 1994. C adets w ork th ro u g h two phases beginning with this inten sive, 5-m onth residential p ro gram during which they cultivate life-coping skills, perform com munity service work and attend academic classes.
