M an io n was aw arded th e 2009 Ecotrust Indigenous Lead ership Award for his work rep resenting the Warm Springs Res ervation, as the general manager o f P ow er an d W ater E n te r prises, and as the chair o f the Deschutes River Conservancy. T h ro u g h o u t his c a re e r M anion has helped to improve the tribe’s economic, pohtical, Duran Bobb/Spilyay Jim Manion and en v iro n m en tal stre n g th th ro u g h creative leadership, managerial skills, and an open fo rm o f com m unication, the E cotrust representative said. Manion’s leadership resulted in a source o f renewable energy for the region, econom ic sup p o rt for the tribe, m ore focus on environm ental m itigation, an d fish a n d w ildlife usage within the D eschutes River ba sin. As the main awardee, Manion received a $25,000 grant, which h e p le d g e d m ainly to th e D eschutes River Conservancy and the W arm Springs Boys and Girls Club. T he D eschutes River C on servancy is a nonprofit organi zation th at w orks w ith cities, counties and irrigation districts to improve fish habitat in the D eschutes and its tributaries. T he W arm Springs Boys and Girls Club is starting up again and needs som e funding help, said Manion. Some o f the m oney will also go to a tribal canoe project for youth, he said.
