Spilyay Tymoo, Wan m Springs, Oregon October 22, 2 0 0 9 Page 3 Diabetes prevention program focuses on youth Diabetes prevention should start at a young age, especially among Native American youth. Toward this goal, the Indian H ealth Service, the National Congress o f American Indians, th e Boys & G irls C lubs o f A m erica and N ike have partnered to create a program aimed at reducing the onset of diabetes among Native Ameri can youth. Jocelyn Moses has just com pleted a three-day training pro gram for the development and implementation o f the Warm Springs Place for Kids-Boys & Girls Club diabetes prevention program. Moses is the program super visor, and also coordinator of the TRAIL (Together Raising Awareness o f Indian Life) pro gram. At the Place for Kids-Boys & Girls Club, the program is called “O n the TRAIL to Dia betes Prevention.” The program is an innovative combination o f physical, educa tional and nutritional activities that promote healthy lifestyles, said Moses. TRAIL is a 12-week program that provides youth with a com prehensive understanding o f healthy lifestyles aimed at help ing to prevent diabetes. The Boys & Girls Club o f Warm Springs is one o f the 40 grant recipients to participate in this exciting initiative, said Moses. Members draw from tribal traditions and history to learn about nutrition, food choices and the impact of diabetes. They then apply decision making and goal-setting skills in the Physical Activity Challenge and engage in service projects to improve healthy lifestyles in their communities. Woven throughout the pro gram are self-esteem and pre vention activities; community and family involvement is en couraged. This year, Jocelyn is looking forward to working with all in terested community members, and encourages them to openly volunteer or assist with imple menting chapter activities re lated to diabetes awareness or th at w ant to share cultural knowledge with the youth.
