August 27, 20 0 9 Spilyay Tymoo, W^rm Springs, Oregon Page 6 Busy summer for youth workers T he Summer Youth workers o f th e N a tu ra l R eso u rces B ranch to o k on a variety o f p ro je c ts o v e r th e p a st few months. They w ent huckleberry pick ing and then delivered the ber ries to elders living at H igh Loojcee Lodge. T h ey fix ed fen cin g an d picked up trash on the reserva tion, and planted willow and al der trees along Shitike Creek. They helped collect fish at the Warm Springs National Fish Hatchery, and visited the Park Dale hatchery as well. T h e students traveled the possible Palomar pipeline route on the reservation, and also toured the N orth Unit Irrigation District. They helped out at the Se niors Picnic last m onth at the Cove, and cleaned up Indian Park. They harvested tule reeds at the Re-regulating dam reservoir, made tule mats, and prepared reeds for use by the Cultural Re sources Department. With tracking devices they lo cated big horn sheep in the M ut ton M ountains. They cleaned water troughs for livestock and wildlife, among other projects. The students, supervised by L ana L e o n a rd , are A n to n e M oody, L e o n a rd A m erican Horse, Tyrell Smith, Cheyenne Wahnetah, Victoria Spino and Joella Smith. Clay Penhollow of Natural Resources also helped w ith th e b ra n c h ’s S um m er Youth project. This week is the students’ last week o f Summer Youth work, as school is starting soon. The students were great to work with, and had a produc tive an d fu n su m m er, said Leonard, w ho during the school year is the tribal liaison at Ma dras High School.
