Spilygy Tym oo, Warm Springs, Oregon Page 12 Survey work on Deschutes Project to improve fish habitat Survey crews from Port land General Electric are sur veying sections o f the lower Deschutes River this m onth to support projects aimed at improving habitat for salmon and trout. T he w ork is p art o f on going habitat restoration ef forts required under the op erating license for the Pelton R ound B utte hydroelectric project, co-ow ned by P G E and the Confederated Tribes o f the Warm Springs. T h e survey crew s have placed stakes, flagging and other markers at seven sites on the ten-mile segm ent o f th e riv e r b e tw e e n th e Reregulating D am and Trout Creek. T he next step is to 2008 Pontiac G6 V6, Automatic, 17,800 miles survey those sites over the next few weeks, essentially mapping cross sections o f the river to measure the availability and use o f gravel habitat where migra tory fish can spawn. Part o f the survey work will require use o f a jet-boat on the river betw een A ugust 17 and August 19. T he crews have obtained a special-use perm it in order to use the jet-boat. T he same seven sites were previously surveyed for this pur pose in 1996 and again in 2007. Fisherm en and other visitors to the area are being asked to avoid d istu rb in g any survey m arkers so th at the w ork can be com pleted as quickly and accurately as possible, with mini mal disruption to the river. Crews will remove all stakes and other markers once the sur veys are finished. . P G E and the tribes are work ing with many other partners in the Deschutes basin on a long term cooperative effort to im prove fish habitat on the upper and lower river and its tributaries. During the Pelton Round B utte p ro je c t’s 50-year li cense, the co-ow ners will spend m ore than $135 mil lio n o n p ro je c t im p ro v e ments, the vast majority go ing to fish-related measures. Pelton Round Butte, the largest hydroelectric project within Oregon, generates 465 m illion w a tts capacity o f electricity to serve custom ers and the tribes. It is the only hydroelec tric p ro je c t in the n atio n jointly ow ned by a N ative American tribe and a utility. Additional details can be found online at: deschutespassage.com.
