Survey work on Deschutes

placed stakes, flagging and
other markers at seven sites
on the ten-mile segm ent o f
th e riv e r b e tw e e n th e
Reregulating D am and Trout
Creek. T he next step is to

survey those sites over the next
few weeks, essentially mapping
cross sections o f the river to
measure the availability and use
o f gravel habitat where migra
tory fish can spawn.
Part o f the survey work will
require use o f a jet-boat on the
river betw een A ugust 17 and
August 19.
T he crews have obtained a
special-use perm it in order to
use the jet-boat.
T he same seven sites were
previously surveyed for this pur
pose in 1996 and again in 2007.
Fisherm en and other visitors
to the area are being asked to
avoid d istu rb in g any survey
m arkers so th at the w ork can
be com pleted as quickly and
accurately as possible, with mini
mal disruption to the river.
Crews will remove all stakes
and other markers once the sur
veys are finished.

long term cooperative effort
to im prove fish habitat on
the upper and lower river and
its tributaries.
During the Pelton Round

ments, the vast majority go
ing to fish-related measures.
Pelton Round Butte, the
largest hydroelectric project
within Oregon, generates 465
m illion w a tts capacity o f
electricity to serve custom
ers and the tribes.
It is the only hydroelec
tric p ro je c t in the n atio n
jointly ow ned by a N ative
American tribe and a utility.
