(AP) - O ffic e rs fro m th e P uyallup Tribe and the Bureau o f Indian Affairs seized scores o f artifacts fro m an a n tiq u e d e aler in Tacoma on Thursday, suspect ing the items were stolen. Tribal police have a suspect, who was expected to turn him self in to tribal authorities, said Lt. Lt. T odd W escott o f the Puyallup tribal police. “I have his num ber and I'll be in contact with him tom or row,” Wescott said. “The guy said he will come forth.” T he item s had been sched uled to be auctioned by Sanford & Son Antiques in Tacoma. The dealer's ow ner A lan G orsuch said earlier this week th at he believed he bought the baskets, photographs and other Native American items from a repre sentative o f the owner, 88-year- old Ramona Hawthorne, who is the daughter o f a Puyallup tribal leader from a century ago. Gorsuch has been “very co operative with the whole proce d u re ,” said J o h n W eym er, a spokesman for the tribe. Scrutiny on the items in the auction ramped up after an ar ticle in th e n ew sp a p er. H aw thorne's neighbors began calling the police and putting up posters alerting people the items were stolen. “I'm trying to get everyone in o n th is ,” said n e ig h b o r Brenda Hall. “I'd like to stand up and say it's a shame this is being sold. M ona has nobody. She has no one looking out for her.” T he item s seized include a rare Coast Salish woven basket, tribal photographs and oth er items. “ T h e trib e is e x tre m e ly p lea se d th a t th e item s have been recovered. Entries will be accepted for the 2010 stamp from M onday until the end o f July. T he an gler art program is open to any Minnesota resident. Eligible species are brook, brown, rainbow, splake and lake trout, coho, pink and Atlantic salmon. T he stamps serve two pur poses. They are required for anglers fish in g in d e sig n a te d tr o u t stre am s a n d lakes o r w h e n n pc they're in possession o f a trout or salmon. They are sold in con junction with regular fishing li censes. Some people also buy them for collectable reasons. Judging o f entries will take place Aug. 6.
