Page 2 Spilyay Tymoo, Warm Springs, Oregon July 2, 2009 Museum hosting Living Traditions Several hundred people attended the Ninth Annual Pi-Ume-Sha Health Fair. T he M useum at Warm Springs will present the Living Traditions program this month through early September. The Living Traditions live educational demonstrations are on Saturdays and Sundays, from 1 to 5 p.m. The schedule o f demonstrations is as follows: J u ly 11-12: Beaded bags, bead tapestry, presented by Rose Scott. Ju ly 18-19: Loom beading, presented by Mercedes Miller. Ju ly 25-26: Cedar root bas kets, presented by Antoinette Pamperien. A u g u st 1-2: Cedar bark bas ketry, presented by Viola The fair included over 25 health- and safety- related booths, set up in the gymnasium at the community center. Those who attended were offered free screenings and health information, bike helmets, car-seat installations, and healthy snacks. The Confederated Tribes and the tribal community health programs helped to organize and sponsor the event. Dave McMechan/Spilyay D Parade, BBQ, fireworks Saturday The Warm Springs commu nity will celebrate the Fourth of July with a parade, barbecue and kids games, and fireworks. The theme of the Fourth of July celebration this year is, “United We Stand— Proud to be an American.” The parade preparation, in cluding bike decorating, begins at 9 a.m. at the Warm Springs Elementary School parking lot. The parade line-up and judg ing begins at 10 a.m., and the parade begins at 11 a.m. The judging categories are: floats, horses, walkers, organi zations, and riders (bikes and wagons). The community barbecue— hamburgers and hot dogs—be gins at 12:30 p.m. at the com munity center. The family games begin at 2 p.m. The fireworks, by Western Display Fireworks, begin at dusk. A ugust 4: Fossil trip to Hancock Field Station near Fos sil, grades 5-8. August 11: Trip to windmill farm, grades 5-8. Recreation field trips The Recreation Department will also be hosting field trips this summer: July 9: Skate W orld in Gresham. Cost: $4.75. '• I I « I . . . a 'I ì | .....................« 11 I T B reakfast & Lu nch Resource team approves creek, other projects The Resource Manage ment Inter-disciplinary Team recently approved a project assessment for restoration work on Shitike Creek near the community area. The team also approved a number o f smaller projects. The Shitike Creek resto ration project will reduce im pacts caused by erosion near the community waste water ponds, reduce the risk o f fu ture flooding, and improve fish habitat. The streambed that has been channelized dow n stream of the Wellness Cen ter will be relocated to the north, where it will assume a more winding and natural course. The realigned creek will feature a number o f mean der bends and appropriate side channels. The bends will be stabi lized by placing engineered log jams in the creek. The project will affect 2,800 feet o f Shitike Creek. Phase 2 of the project will include removal o f the de commissioned wastewater set tling ponds. The sludge and clay liner underlying the sludge will be removed and disposed o f appropriately. The resource team also approved small project as sessm ents for th e Pinky Beymer Conservation Plan, the C o rtazar hom e site phone line trenching, and the Weylon Beymer home con struction.
