Their visit was part o f a U.S. State D epartm ent p ro gram called the International Visitors Leadership Program. “It’s a program o f citizen di plom acy betw een our em bas sies,” said Thomas N orton, one o f the interpreters w ho traveled with the group. The Brazilians speak Portuguese, and their na tive languages. O ne o f the visitors, Adolfo Timotio, is the chief o f his tribal village o f sev eral h u n d re d people, and chairm an o f his entire tribe o f 40,000 members. The Brazilians toured Warm Springs Power and Water Enter prises, the M useum at W arm Springs, Kah-Nee-Ta, and Warm Springs Forest Products Indus tries. The Brazilians also met with Warm Springs tribal members for a salmon bake at the m u seum. The Confederated Tribes o f Warm Springs are part owners and operators o f the dams. In Brazil, dams are built w ithin tribal lands with little or no re gard for the Natives, w ho re ceive no benefit from the dams.
