To the parents, students and citizens o f Jefferson County School District 509-J: I believe the health of a com munity is direcdy related to the issues it chooses to focus on. We have recendy had to deal with some issues that have a negative impact on our schools and community. We m ust give attention to these issues, deal with them in the m ost effect and efficient manner as possible, and bring closure. This will allow us to refocus our atten tio n bn the great things we do each and every day for the students in our commu nity. I ask you, the community, to u n d erstan d and tru s t your school district is constantly striving to create the best envi ronment for all students. I hope this message helps us move for ward together and continue a great school year. Late last week, Physical Edu cation teacher and coach Dan Hiatt made a comment to a stu dent during an athletic prac tice— a com m ent th a t he deeply regrets and has apolo gized for. As your superinten dent, I have also apologized be cause everything said and done in our schools is a reflection of the culture in our district. It is important to understand that we must follow our policies and procedures regarding staff discipline. O ur procedures are based on local board policies, plus state and federal laws that protect our constitutional rights as citizens. Consequently, these laws re quire confidentiality when han dling personnel matters such as discipline. As a result of our investiga tion, Mr. Hiatt has agreed to re sign from all coaching assign ments. While Mr. Hiatt will continue in his teaching position, all poli cies and procedures in this mat ter were followed and steps have been taken to assure this will not occur again. Mr. H iatt returned to his teaching position as o f Monday, Oct. 20. As your superintendent, I have chosen to view this expe rience as a lesson and I invite you to do the same. Our growth and forgiveness as adults sets a good example for our students— and it allows us to move forward and focus on the positive. Please contact me if you have any questions. P ortland State University School of Social Work is offer ing a three-year Master of So cial Work program based in Bend beginning in the fall of 2009. The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs is among the par ties to an agreement for the relicensing of the Carmen Smith Hydroelectric Project on the upper McKenzie River water shed. The tribes are among 16 par ties who were to sign the agree ment in Eugene on Tuesday of this week (after deadline for this paper). The agreement outlines the environmental, recreational, cul tural and historical improve ments that the parties believe should be part o f a new operat ing license.
