Engagement o f Nicholas Sanford Belgard & Casandra A n n Frutos August 9th, 2008 will be a day to rem em ber for Casandra Frutos o f Warm Springs, and N icholas Belgard of Siletz, as Nicho las proposed in front o f an excited Saturday evening crowd at the Nesika Illahee Powwow in Siletz, to his un suspecting sweetheart. Since meeting that fateful day, November, 3 2007 at the Mt. H ood Community College Powwow in Gresham, the two have been inseparable. Together, Nicholas and Casandra share a passion for family, friends, community and culture, and have made a commitment to share that passion with the tribes and their people. Currently, Casandra works as a Project Assistant for the Northwest Portland Area In dian Health Board, and takes classes part time at Pioneer Pacific College, while Nicho las works in property man agement for a small property in Gresham, and is an accom plished musician working in Portland. They eventually plan to work full time within the tribes in some capacity, and New program for breast cancer detection, prevention By Elizabeth “Lizzi” Katz Community Breast Health Educator Sara Fisher Project St. Charles Medical Center T he Warm Springs Breast Health Program is a joint effort by the Sara Fisher Breast Can cer Project of the Warm Springs Health and Wellness Clinic, St. Charles Medical Center, Moun tain View Hospital and the Ma dras Medical Group. The program is sponsored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Our goal is to promote breast cancer screening to the women o f Warm Springs. American Indian women have the lowest incidence o f breast cancer yet have the poor est five-year survival rates, due mostly to lack of screening and later detection of cancer. Getting tested regularly is the best way for women to lower their risk o f dying from breast cancer, as screening tests can find breast cancer early, when it’s most treatable. Screening recommendations are for women ages 20-40 to have a clinical breast exam by a medical provider at least every three years. If you are age 40 or older, you should be screened for breast cancer w ith a clinical breast exam and a mammogram every year. T he Warm Springs Breast Health Program wants to make screening as easy as one-two- three. One: Clinical breast exam. Schedule a w om en’s health exam.’ Call the Warm Springs Health and Wellness Center at 553-2610. Two: Have a mammogram. Receive a m am m ogram at Mountain View Hospital Imag ing Department.
