Page 9 July 31, 20 08 Spilyay Tymoo, Wgrro Springs, Oregon Howlak Tichum R. Smith May 5, 1947 - July Ronald R. Smith was born on May 5, 1947 and passed away on July 4, 2008 at -age 61. Ronnie was proud o f his N ative A m erican heritage. H e was half G rand Ronde a n d h a lf W a s c o /W a rm Springs and was an enrolled m em ber o f the C onfeder a te d T rib e s o f W arm Springs. Ronnie was a veteran, fa ther, brother, uncle, cousin, g ra n d p a a n d a frie n d to many. Ronnie served in the U nited States A rm y for ten years (from 1966 to 1976) and obtained sergeant m ajor status. H e was Special Forces and G reen Beret. H e was highly trained in several ar eas including electronic com munications, medical, navy seals, as well as advanced arm y training. H e served in the V ietnam War, Germany, A sia, S o u th A m erica and Africa. As a young child, at age six, Ronnie took piano les sons, therein beginning his great love for music for the rest o f his life. Ronnie was a professional musician for many, many years, specializ ing in keyboards. H e also played all saxophones, bass guitar, clarinet and base clari- * net. R o n n ie w as asso ciated w ith great entertainers dur ing his life. H e played w ith the Steve M iller B and b e tw e e n 1976-1980; D io n e Warwick betw een 1980-82; played m usic for the Miss America pageant in 1981; Ke K ee D e e B and; N ic o le tt L a rso n ; a n d F a t C h a n c e ' Band in Portland. H e also played in bands that opened for L ou Rawls, B and w ith Lito Manapul, Boyet Quiroz, Ju h n elsip , D o n Macala, and Eddie Constantino, managed by Andy Bayat. U p until the last couple m onths o f his life, Ronnie played w ith b an d s in th e B end area w ith talented musi cians, w h o m he adm ired and cared a lot about. Ronnie kept contact w ith his family no m atter w here he was; always checking on them and staying in touch w ith w hat was happening at home. R o n n ie c o m e s fro m a hardworking and respected fam ily o f aunts and uncles: Russell Smith and Ruthie; Rita and Earl Squiemphen; A lfred Smith Jr.; Wissie Smith; and A unt G inger Smith. H e is preceded in death by his father, atwai Roscoe Smith; his m other, atwai Rose Mary S m ith ; g ra n d p a r e n ts , atw ai A lfred Smith Sr. and Lucinda S m ith ; g ra n d p a r e n ts , atw ai L a w re n c e S m ith St. an d G ertrude Smith; as well as other aunts and uncles on b o th sides o f the family. Ronnie is survived by brother D arryl Smith, K enneth Miller, Dennis Smith Sr., Robert Smith, Julian Smith, E ldred Smith and Kevin Smith Sr. H is surviving sisters are Marcia Smith Soliz, T rudie Sm ith, S haron Miller, Toni Made, Pam Cardenas, Joni Smith Aguilar, and Robin Smith, all o f W arm Springs. H e has one daughter, Uilani Sm ith-M unoz, w ho resides in Washington. Also surviving are th re e g ra n d c h ild re n (M ario M unoz Jr., Ulyssa and Marena). Faye Waheneka, w hom we af fectionately refer to as our other m om and grandm a also survives Ronnie. Ronnie lived a full life. H e 2008 was truly a jack-of-all-trades. H e w as an a r tis t in his younger years. H e worked in the logging industry. H e was a salesman. H e was a radio disc jockey. H e worked w ith computers and technol ogy. H e had very high m ath ematical skills and excellent w ritin g skills. H e v o lu n teered his keyboard talents by playing fo r fam ilies at hospitals. H e played for fu nerals, weddings, church ser vices, fairs, gatherings and more. Ronnie, like other people, had challenges in his life. H e had a trem endous sense o f h u m o r. H e easily m ad e friends w herever he traveled and lived. H e cared a lot a b o u t th e p e o p le at th e ap artm en t com plex w here he lived in Bend. I n th e e n d , h e s u c cum bed to an extended ill ness and was in great physi cal pain. R on n ie’s funeral wish was to be taken care o f in the traditional ways o f his Tribe. H e was recognized and h o n o red w ith full military services during the course o f th e fu n e ra l a n d b u ria l. Ronnie was a humble person and appreciative o f even the sm allest things in life and lived a simple life. I t appears family and oth ers learned a lo t o f positive things about Ronnie during the funeral services that he never spoke of. Family is forever grateful to the Cre ator for the privilege o f hav ing Ronnie in our lives and being part o f our family. Al though Ronnie has gone on, he is still im p actin g u s— keeping values/standards we were taught, how im portant it is to take care o f ourselves and to live a full life. Ronnie is very m uch loved and will be missed a lot. In the tribal way, a memorial will be held in one year.
