The Jefferson County soft ball team recently took third place in the Oregon State Litde League tournament. T h e team finished the to u r n a m e n t w ith a 2-2 record. Playing for the Jefferson County softball team were lo ca l girls E lise Bagley, Keeyana Yellowman, Jordan L eonard, M ariah Stacona, Kasheena Stevens, Séria Patt, K o rtn e y S tacona, Shania Tom and Marlene Tias. C oach K arla P att said, “They did excellent.” The team earned the nick name o f “the iron nine” af ter playing w ith only nine players. T hat m eant two players continued to play despite be ing injured because the team had no substitutes. D u rin g o n e gam e, E lise Bagley played after being hit by pitches while K ortney Stacona was tagged hard at hom e plate. “They had to play through injuries and everything th at came up,” Patt said. T he team also earned a very positive reputation, Patt said. “Everywhere we played they w ere c o m p lim e n ted by the other coaches and their um pires, even at state, for their p o sitiv e a ttitu d e a n d th e ir sportsmanship,” Patt said. “We were really proud o f how they acted and how they represented Warm Springs.” Jefferson County ended the to u rn am en t w ith a 6-3 loss against Parrish o f South Salem. Jefferson County had previ ously w on against host team Centennial 19-11. T heir o th er win occurred 15-6 in a game against Pendleton. While some o f the girls had played softball together before, Patt said, the early division between teammates quickly dissolved. “T he girls ended as a really strong team,” Patt said. “The c o m m u n ity sh o u ld be really proud o f them.” As for her experience coach ing the team, Patt added, “I t was exciting.” “This was my first year ever coaching and so I had to learn along w ith the girls,” Patt ex plained. “We had parent support from all the parents. They were always there helping, providing support and encouragement and their own knowledge o f the skills o f the game.” In Patt’s opinion, “It was very enjoyable.” Patt and Trey Leonard served as managers for the team. Local players help to w in state title M artin B row n and E ddie Jones helped the Redmond Senior League Baseball Team advance to the Western Regionals recently. T he two Warm Springs youth p lay ed w ith th e tea m in Boardman recendy and w ent 3- 0 in the state tournam ent. N ext their team com peted in the W estern Regionals in U p land, Calif., on July 29 (games occurred after the deadline for th is p a p e r). T h a t 10 -team , double elimination tournam ent lasts until August 3. Brown will be going into his ju n io r year a t M adras H igh School. H e proved to be a key player in advancing his team to the regional tournam ent, allow ing only one hit, three walks and one unearned run in six innings that he pitched in a game against Reynolds recendy. Jones, who will be a sopho m ore next year at Madras High S c h o o l, p itc h e d in a gam e against Salem and allowed one unearned fu n and struck out four players. During the game against Sa lem, Brown played shortstop. R edm ond b e g in the state to u rn am en t w ith a 12-3 win against Reynolds. D uring that gam e, Brow n played shortstop while Jones played third base and catcher. T he two played in a game against the M ontana on July 29. The Western Regional winner will advance to the Senior World Series from August 6 through August 10 in Bangor, Maine.
