It meant a lot, even now as I look back on all the chaos that happened at that time, I appre ciate each and every person that was there at the prayer services held at our dad’s house and ev eryone who helped throughout my brother’s funeral. Identity I writing you in regards to Birthday At the time immemorial we, the River People, practiced a custom almost forgotten: the birthday. We had a big feast! After this we would bring out the presents, bartered for, procured ourselves in many ways. Then»we would give it away. He, she, whom had a birthday. This practice needs to be re vived. It had been a good medi cine to our body, heart, soul. Today is my birthday, and at this time all I can give you is my love, share this teaching of our Indian custom. Still yet the hard work that goes into coaching, trying to find o u t tribal in fo r year-to-year, decade to decade, mation about my mother Mary J. Baker. I witnessed her mur der that happened in Gresham on January 11, 1976. She had two sisters at the time, I believe, Lois Buck and Clela Long. Both with the maiden name Baker. I am in the process of trying to find my identity while being here at Powder River Correc tional Facility. In doing so I need as much help and information as I can get to complete this journey. We are all dying. As you read this all our lives are getting shorter. It’s called life. Some people are so impressed with themselves, thinking they’re all th is a n d all th at. Me, I ’m nothing. A Wasco man going through life the best I can, well maybe not the best I can, cause the loss of my temper has gotten me into a lot of ugly situations. Coaching. I had the honor and privilege of coaching teen basketball with our youth for a number o f years. There is no greater feeling than that o f one o f our young men coming up to you and saying thank you for coaching, for this reason or that reason. To know that you made a positive difference in some young person’s life, maybe at a time in their life that they needed The season was a tough one th a t had many good teams in the league. Yet in the end, with hard work and qual ity playing, our team pulled out ahead of the rest to be nam ed th e 2008 league champs. Ty and the Eagles. somebody to just be there, is an honor. I thank the teen boys that I coached and their parents for giving me this honor and trust. Thank you. Dad, Alvis W Smith Sr., this is where I got the experience to be a coach. All kids are differ ent; you can’t coach all kids the same way. They have different feelings, attitudes, needs, etc. E very one o f us have our strengths and weaknesses, no body is all this and all that. Coaching brings you into the circle o f our children. Drive 15 young local skins from Warm Springs to Reno, Nevada in a too small van and you have to learn real fast how to try and cope.
