The students are three out o f a record-breaking 177 stu dents to graduate high school with the class o f 2008. This year tops last year’s high num ber o f 170 gradu ates. O v e r 50 se n io rs fro m Warm Springs participated in the graduation ceremony at Madras High School on June 7, The tribes’ and the E du c a tio n D e p a rtm e n t w ere planning to host the G radu atio n B anquet at the Agency Longhouse on the evening o f W ednesday, Ju n e 18 (after print deadline for this paper). Each year, the banquet is for all tribal mem bers w ho are g rad u atin g fro m high school, boarding school, tech n ical sch o o l, college an d graduate school, or receiving their GED. Pi-Ta Pitt at Columbia University graduation. Pi-Ta Pitt has graduated from Columbia University in N ew York City. Pitt earned a Bachelor o f A rts degree in Economics. Pitt, 28, is the son o f Louie Pitt and Nancy Pitt. Pi-Ta said the course w ork at Columbia was m ore diffi cult than he at first expected. B ut he kept working and gradu ated this spring. His family and family friends attended the graduation in N ew York. Pitt said he is happy to be back in O regon, although, he said, living in N ew York was a great experience. Pitt, who worked summers at W arm Springs N atural Re sources, started his post-high school education at Portland Community College, where he earned an Associates Degree. H e then transferred to Columbia. “I wanted to go som e where big and different,” he said.
