The Confederated Tribes o f W arm Springs have en dorsed G ordon Smith for re- election to the U.S. Senate. T he other eight federally recog nized tribes o f Oregon have also endorsed Sen. Smith. Although a devoted Repub lican, Calica said he supports Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for President. Tribal members, who wish to volunteer, w ho need to register to vote, or would like campaign material for Sen. G ordon Smith can contact either Floyd Calica or Jim Manion. Logging practice Follow ing the conference, held June 10 at Kah-Nee-Ta, the group toured parts o f the res ervation. “We v is ite d areas w h e re we’ve m anaged for berry en hancement,” said Jiminez. E n hancem ent was through thin ning o f trees, and where logging had been conducted over snow. “Logging over snow absorbs the im pact o f lagging,” said Jim in ez. “T h is p ro te c ts th e huckleberry shrubs.” W hen logging is done on bare grounds, berries can take up to 20 years to return, said Jiminez.
