Page 2 February 28, 2 0 0 8 Spilyay Tymoo, Warm Springs, Oregon Ellsbury fans excited as season nears B y D ave M cM echan Spilyay Tymoo Major League Baseball this year has an added meaning for many Warm Springs residents. “We’re very excited about this season,” said baseball fan Dawn Sm ith, principal o f W arm Springs Elem entary School. “We’re planning to get tickets to the M ariners w hen B oston comes to Seatde.” The extra excitem ent this year for local residents is Jacoby Ellsbury, who is likely to start in center field for the defending World Champion Boston Red Sox. Ellsbury, 24, is the hometown hero o f W arm Springs and Madras, where he grew up and first played baseball. He is a graduate o f M adras H igh School. Ellsbury last week became the subject of some baseball discus sion when Coco Crisp said he would probably talk to the Red Sox ab o u t being trad ed if Ellsbury becomes the starter. Crisp, 28, was the starting center fielder in Boston most of last season, while Ellsbury was a Double-A Portland. But during the regular season Ellsbury played in started 26 games for the Red Sox, hitting Last week, after Crisp indi cated he would maybe want to be traded if Ellsbury becomes the starter, the consensus among sports-talk radio hosts was that Ellsbury would likely be the starter. Ellsbury is a favorite player not only o f baseball fans in Madras and Warm Springs, but throughout the region. A sports store in Bend, Pro Image, is carrying a large quan tity of Ellsbury items, such as his number 46 jerseys and t- shirts. P ro Im age ow ner Tim m Bartlett said he expects the ship m ent o f items to arrive this week. He can be reached at 749- 4281 to check on whether the items have arrived yet. The jerseys come in three colors: home, away and alter nate, which are white, red or grey. The jerseys go for $109. The t-shirts are more affordable, said Bartlett.
