Ben M arra, a Seattle-based photographer, began a project to docum ent powwows through photography in 1988. H e and his wife Linda run their company, Ben Marra P ho tography, and travel around to powwows. W hile he works as a p h o to g ra p h e r, L in d a M a rra works as a producer and docu- mentarian. Gary Villa Sohappy, Leona A. Ike, Kayla Johnson, Sparrowhawk Walsey, Christine Johnson, Cecilia Herrera, Ron Walsy and James Walsey are all currendy included in the photographs— but Iin d a Marra said the end result will de pend on how many photographs the publishers decide to include. Because o f that, she said, it is possible that n o t all o f the tribal m em bers will be included in the final product. Marra said they expect the book to be pub lished in early 2009. The book will be a retrospec tive o f the M arra’s past 20 years photographing powwows and portraits o f powwow dancers. A pproxim ately 150 p h o to graphs will be featured. Marra initially began p hoto graphing powwows after a ch e a t sought to prom ote color printing techniques. R ather than typical images, M arra convinced the client to use photographs o f local Native Americans. T h at weekend, the M arra’s traveled to a powwow and after th at their p h o todocum entary project officially began. W hile M arra does ph o to g raph dancing, his style o f p o rtrait p h o tography is unmatched. In fact, it’s the portraits that Marra photographs that set him apart from other photographers. ‘W e have the largest contem porary portfolio o f this type o f w ork existing on the planet,” Linda Marra said. T m not say ing that there aren’t some people photographing portraits out there, but no one has done this for 20 year to the extent that we have.” According to Ben Marra, ‘W e have thought that you know, any body, a lot o f photographers could stand around the circle and get grab shots o f dancers. According to Ben Marra, the narratives Serve to “give a fuller picture o f w ho they are rather than just looking at a two-di mensional image o f them. It kind o f rounds out the mental image o f the person that they’re looking at.” Some o f the text is from sev eral years ago, but Linda Marra said, ‘A s long as the text seems to be still relevant today, then that is what will accompany their They’ve set up their equipment in places like airplane hangars and abandoned dog kennels, to name a few examples. ‘W e have adapted quite well and realize its such a wonderful opportunity to us,” Linda Marra said. Accreditation is given only to laboratories that apply rigid standards o f quality in day-to- day operations, dem onstrate continued accuracy in the per form ance o f proficiency test ing, and pass a rigorous on site laboratory survey. O ur »Laboratory D epartm ent has earned COLA accreditation as a result o f long-term comm it m ent to provide quality ser vice to their patients. COLA is a nonprofit, phy sician-directed organization prom oting quality and excel lence in medicine and patient care th ro u g h p ro g ram s o f voluntary education, achieve m ent, and accreditation. I The Warm Springs Health and Wellness Center now fea tures improved patient check in for laboratory appointments. L ab o rato ry p atients will now be checked in for their ap pointm ents at the Patient Reg istration desk upon entering the clinic. This is the same for all patients checking in at the clinic. T he process will speed up the patient visit and help laboratory p a tie n ts m ove th ro u g h th e clinic m ote efficiently. W hen a patient receives a let ter or phone call telling them that laboratory testing is recom m ended by their healthcare pro vider, they will need to stop at the Patient Registration desk to check in. Here, the Registra tion Clerk will check the patient in to the laboratory a p p o in t m ent scheduler and print the orders to the laboratory printer. This is how the staff knows the patient is ready. T he staff will then call the patient directly into the laboratory drawing room . Patients will no longer have to check into the ‘lab’ window be cause it has already been done by Patient Registration. Also, it is n o t necessary to ring the bell anymore unless it has been 15 m inutes since check-in. A patient used to make 2 -3 additional stops before be ing called into the lab. N ow they only need one stop— the front Patient Registration desk. Patients now only have to check in and have a seat. T he laboratory staff will be with them shordy. Many pa tients have told us that this is an im provem ent and they are happy with how quickly they are in and out o f the laboratory. I f for som e reason Pa tient Registration does not find lab orders in the com puter for the patient check ing in, the clerk will let the patient know and they will need to go to Medical Re ception to check in so lab tests can be o rd e re d and printed by the clinic staff.
