Report: Klamath fish need more water (AP) — Conservation groups seeking removal o r four aging Kiamath River dams near the California border welcomed a report Wednesday by the Na tional Research Council con firming studies indicating that salmon and other fish need more water. “This report is a major vic tory for salmon, commercial fishermen, Native Americans,, and everyone else who careè about the health of the Klamath River;,” said Steve Pedery con servation director for Oregon Wild, based in Portland, ' The report comes as federal agencies prepare a new evalua tion of salmon and endangered stocks o f'th e Klamath fish known as suckers, as interest groups try to negotiate a settle ment of water issues, and as fed eral regulators decide the fate of the four dams on the river, which runs through Southern Oregon and Northern Califor nia. The battle oyer water man agement in the high desert ba sin has pitted farmers and irri gators against Indian tribes, fish er rnen and environmental groups. A leader of the NatiQUaJ Re search Council study; § aid it agreed with recommendations from Utah State University re searchers led by Thomas Hardy that more water would help in crease salmon runs. “That .conclusion is based partly on _ frankly _ scientific judgment,” said William Graf, a Univefsiiy or South Carolina geography professor and chair man of the committee of sci entists who wrote the report re leased Wednesday. “But it's also based on more data that's be come available in the last, say, two to four years.” ; r The council, the research arm of the National Academy of Sciences, reviewed two separate water studies on the Klamath River Basin. ! One study was the Utah State study, on the lower part of the river. The other was by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, on the upper reach. Decline in Chinook salmon concerns biologists MERCED, Calif. (AP) _ Bi ologists are concerned by a rapid decline in the number of Chi nook salmon spawning in the Merced, Tuolumne and Stanislaus rivers this year. The California Department of Fish and Game expects fewer than 500 salmon, will spawn in the Merced River this year, down from 1,200 last year. \ . Chinook salmon typically spend several years in the ocean before returning to inland streams and rivers to spawn. One biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said this year's low fish count could spell crisis for the population. Scientists are exploring how loss of habitat, murky water conditiorisTiow water flows, high temperatures and toxic algae are affecting the species. Lake Oswego men make second try at private casino (AR)t - Two Lake Oswego men are making another run at a statewide vote On a private commercial casino. Investment adviser Bruce Studer and attorney Matt Rossman want to put a casino ind resort at the Multnomah Kennel Club, a former grey hound track in Wood Village near Gresham. They tried in 20.06 to put ini tiatives on the ballot to allow the casino but ran out of time to gather signatures. They , filed three prospective initiatives last week with the Oregon secretary of state's of fice for next year's election. The measures would change the state constitution.and law to allow the casino and to give a quarter of the adjusted gross revenue to the state for educa tion and children's health care. Oregon has nine casinos, all operated by or for Indian tribes. To get an initiative on the ballot to change state law re quires 6 percent of the 2006 total vote for governor, or 82,769 signatures, by early July . To get a constitutional amendment on the ballot re quires 8 percent, or 110,358 sig natures. The secretary of state's of fice has to approve the petitions before signatures can be gath ered.
