O n Saturday, O cto b e r 13, hundreds o f hard-working fami lies, struggling seniors, veterans and others can take a bus from Madras to the H ooker Creek Event Center at the Deschutes County Fair and E xp o Center for a community resource event called P roject Hom eless Con nect. During a 15-hour stretch on January 2 5 , 2007& volunteers counted m ore than 2000 people in D e s c h u te s , C r o o k and Je ffe rs o n bounties w ho were homeless. M ore than 700 were school-age children. “I f all the homeless children in Central O regon were gath ered together, they would fill a dozen school buses. Everyone, especially children, deserve an o p p o rtu n ity to su cce e d in school and in life, and that is tied ,to having a stable home. To sue-, ceed, you need a place to call home,” says Jim Schell,^execu tive director o f Central O regon Partnership. T h e Partnership and a tri county coalition o f public and private advocates are teaming up to do so m e th in g a b o u t it. P r o je c t H o m eless C o n n ect, spearheaded by the Homeless Leadership Council and spon sored by T he Partnership, is ah ambitious step toward a ten-year plan to end hom elessness in Central Oregon. A t the event, guests will be able to see a doctor and a den tist, get support on finding and obtaining affordable housing and job opportunities, make a long-distance phone call, receive same. basic necessities, and access nu merous other community ser vices, all under one roof. According to Suzy Reininger, co-chair o f Homeless Leader “Project Homeless Connect gives e v ery o n e a ch an ce to pitch-in, to help hard-working families who are struggling to make ends meet,” says Schell. ‘W e are going to work together b eg in n in g O c to b e r 1 3 , and change lives and the way the community works together.” P roject Homeless Connect is currently seeking professionals — particularly doctors, dentists and their sta ff — to provide physical and mental health care services to guests. In addition, organizers are seeking volun teers to greet guests, provide translation services, give haircuts and perform dozens o f other important jobs. : T h e P roject also needs cash and in-kind donations from lo* cal businesses and community ship Council, referral services and continuing care will be avail able after the event as well. “This event is a best practice model designed to make a lasting dif ference for those who partici pate,” she says. P roject H om eless C onnect began in San Francisco in 2004 and has been replicated in nu merous other metropolitan ar eas across the country, includ ing E ugene, O regon. Central O re g o n ’s P r o je c t H o m eless' Connect tiill be the first time tfte project has been attempted on a regional scale in a largely rural setting. • .v Central Oregon Partnership has signed on as a tide sponsor and additionally has issued a challenge grant to m atch com munity donations up to $2500. She was 82. Mrs. O scar was born on September 1 8,1 9 2 5 at Warm Sp rin g s to p aren ts K a -N u t Wolfe and Hattie Mosstocken. She was married to T im Oscar. Mrs. Oscar was a homemaker and m other all o f her life. She is survived by her son Jam es W olfe o f Warm Springs, and numerous grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four children, two brothers and five sisters.
