Page 6 Another great ski day at Mt. Hood Over 70 people attended the recent tribal ski day, sponsored by Mt. Hood Meadows. M ost skiers and snowboarders were kids who had the day off for a teachers in-service day. “This was the best attended and most successful of the six tribal member ski days we have held in the last three years,” said Julie Quaid, who coordinated the event. Young tribal members and some of their adult chaperones spent the day skiing and riding on three inches of fresh snow. M ost received free snowboarding and skiing lessons from the Mt. Hood Meadows Ski School staff. The ski resort provided trans portation, lift tickets, rental equipment and lunch in addition to the lessons. M any o f the young tribal members received hats, gloves helm ets and goggles, w hich Meadows has collected for this purpose over the course of the ski season. “Keeping the kids dressed warmly has been a major goal of our effort,” said Quaid. “If the young tribal members are warm and comfortable in the mountain environment, they are much more likely to enjoy the experience.” During lunch, Dave Riley, president and chief operating officer of Mt. Hood Meadows, was presented a cerem onial feather by Quaid. Adult events include the wild horse race, wild ride with saddle, barrel racing. Youth events are the rescue race, the wild colt race, calf riding, and mutton busting. Fun events for free are the women’s boot race, the calf scramble, and the stick horse race. Entry dates are April 16-18 from 6 to 8 p.m. only. Entry phone number is 553-1208. The Warm Springs Cougars Youth Basketball Organization will be hosting the ninth annual All-Indian Boys and Girls sixth grade and under and eighth grade and under basketball tour nament is this weekend, Friday- Sunday, March 16, 17 and 18 at the Warm Springs Elemen tary Gymnasium and the Com munity Center. Riley was also presented with one of Quaid’s homemade huck leberry pies, a reminder of the huckleberries and other First Foods that grow on and around Mt. Hood. J.R Patt, executive director of the Columbia River Inter- Tribal Fish Commission, and a former Tribal Council chairman, made brief remarks thanking Riley and Mt. Hood Meadows for their generosity. P att said he appreciates Meadows’ efforts toward build ing a supportive relationship betw een the C onfederated Tribes of Warm Springs and Mt. Hood Meadows. Such ef forts include the ski days, huck leberry picking trips, support of federal ‘First Foods’ legislation and hiring tribal members as part o f the Mt. H ood M eadows workforce. Mt. Flood Meadows was rec ognized by the 2Q06 Silver Eagle Award for community relations by the National Asso ciation of Ski Areas for the Warm Springs huckleberry-pick ing event that is held each year in August. This award brought national recognition to the relationship that Meadows has been cultivat ing with Warm Springs for some years now. Heart tournament next month The Third Annual All-Indian Basketball HEART Tourna ment is set for April 20-22 at the Warm Springs Community Center and the Warm Springs E lem entary School gym na sium. Divisions are grades 9- 12 co-ed; grades 6-8 co-ed; grades 3-5 co-ed; and grades k- 2 exhibition. Entry fee is $150 by M arch 30; and $175 by April 6. Traveling teams must have team representative present E-mail to fri@comm.center to re ceive a team packet. Prizes include championship high school division leather sleeves jackets; middle school division jackets; elem entary school division jackets. Madras High School kicks off spring sports season Spring sports at Madras High School are beginning the season and teams have a steady sched ule of competitions throughout the upcoming months. The M adras High School track teams began the season to day, March 15, with a meet in Redmond. Next the teams will compete in Madras against Crook County at 4 p.m. on April 4. After that the varsity track team will travel to Sisters for the Sisters Invitational on April 7, and both the junior varsity and v arsity team s w ill com pete . against Summit in Madras on April 10 at 4 p.m. The varsity team travels to Burns on April 14, and the jun ior varsity and varsity teams travel to Mt. View on April 17. For the varsity team, the next stop is La Pine for the La Pine invitational on April 21. Both teams will compete against Bend in a home track meet on April 25 at 4 p.m. The teams will travel to The Dalles on May 1 to compete again st The D alles and Pendleton, and the- junior var sity team will travel to Mt. View on May 3. The varsity team will com pete in the Rotary Invitational in Madras on May 5 at 10 a.m. For the baseball teams, March 13 marked their first game against Hood River. Yesterday, March 14, the teams played against La Pine and on March 17 they will play in a home game against Kla math Union at 12 p.m. On March 20 the boys will play another home game against Crook County at 4 p.m. After that the baseball teams will travel to Burns on March 22, and re turn to M adras for a home gam e against M arshfield on March 26 at 3 p.m. • On March 29 and March 30 the varsity baseball team will play in the La Pine Tournament, and both the varsity and junior var sity teams will play in a home game against Henley on March 31 at 12 p.m. Next the teams will travel to Bend on April 3, but play in an other home game against Sum mit on April 5 at 4:30 p.m. On April 10 they travel to Mt. View, and the junior varsity team will play a home game against North Lake on April 12 at 4:30 p.m. The next two games will be home games: against Hermiston on April 14, with junior varsity playing at 1 p.m. and varsity at 2 p.m.; and another home game against Burns on April 17 at 4 p.m. After that the teams w ill travel to The Dalles on April 21, to Crook County on April 24, and to Pendleton on April 28. The teams will play a home game on May 1 against Bend at 4:30; next they w ill travel to Summit on May 8 and return for a home game against Mt. View on May 10 at 4:30 p.m. The M adras High School softball teams started the sea son with a home game against Hood River on March 13. Yes terday, March 14, they traveled to La Pine. On March 20 the girls w ill play a home game against Crook County at 4 p.m. After that the girls will travel to Burns on March 22. On March 24 the teams will play a home game against Henley at 12 p.m., and the varsity team will play another home game against Ashland on March 28 at 11 a.m. For the varsity team, March 30 and March 31 will be spent competing in the Sisters tourna ment at 2 p.m. each day. Next both team swill travel to Bend on April 3, and return to Madras for a home game against Summit on April 5. On A pril 10 the softball teams will travel to Mt. View, and they will play a home game against H erm iston on A pril 14— junior varsity will begin at 1 p.m. and varsity at 2 p.m. A fter that the teams w ill travel to The Dalles on April 21, Crook County on April 24, and Pendleton on April 28. The final home game for the softball teams will be on May 10 against Mt. View at 4:30 p.m. The girls’ golf team started the season on March 13 with a varsity match against The Dalles. Today the team will travel to the Sisters Invitational for a var sity match at noon. Next the junior varsity team will travel to Meadow Lakes on March 19. For the varsity girls’ golf team, the next match will be on April 6 in Bend at the IMC Preview. The girls’ golf team will play in Madras on April 21 at the Madras Invitational. The boys’ golf team began the season on March 15 with a varsity match in Crooked River Ranch. On March 19, the jun ior varsity team will compete at the Desert Peaks golf club, while the varsity team will travel to the Summit Invitation at the Eagle Crest Resort on March 22. The varsity boys’ team will play in Madras at the Eagle Crest Resort for the Madras Invitational on April 10. As for the girls’ tennis teams, the junior varsity and varsity teams began the season with a home gam e again st Crook County on March 13. Tonight both teams will travel to Mt. View The next two games for the girls’ tennis teams will be in Madras: on March 16 against Sisters, beginning at 3:30 p.m.; and on March 20 against Sum mit at 4 p.m. On March 22 the girls’ travel to Bend, and on April 3 they travel to The Dalles. Next the tennis team s p lay again st Pendleton and Hermiston on April 7, and then against Sum mit on April 10. On April 12 the girls will play against Crook County, and then the teams will play a home game against Bend that begins at 4 p.m. Both girls’ tennis teams will compete in the Madras Invita tional on April 21, which begins at 8:30. After that the teams will play in a home game against The Dalles on April 26 that begins at 4 p.m. On April 28 the girls will travel to Redmond, but they will return for a home game against Mt. View on May 1 that begins at 4 p.m. The b o ys’ tennis team s played their first game of the season against Crook County on March 13, and play today against Mt. View at a home game. Next the boys’ teams will play against Sisters in Madras on March 16 in a match that be gins at 3:30 p.m. On March 20 the boys travel to Summit, but return for a home game against Bend on March 22. Next they play in M adras against The Dalles on April 3 at 4 p.m., and again st P end leto n and Hermiston on April 7.
