The Honor Dinner will be held on March 24 at the Port land Hilton, in the Pavilion Ball room, 921 S.W. 6th Avenue, Port land. There will be a reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. with din ner and the program to follow at 7 p.m. Former Gov. Victor Atiyeh, and Kenneth L. Smith are the Honorary Co-Chairs. Each year the Museum pre sents the TWANAT Award to an individual whose efforts on behalf of Native Americans can serve as an exam ple for all Americans. Smith, TWANAT honoree. Richard L. Kohnstamm, the Museum At Warm Springs Life time Achievement Award. This year’s recipient W. Richard West, Jr., Execu tive Director of the National He has time and again made the difference in the battle to protect and retain treaty rights such as fishing and water rights, he has testified many times in front of Congress on issues sig nificant to all Tribes such as the Native American Graves Pro tection and Repatriation Act. Chief Nelson Wallulatum is a traditional leader, an elder statesman, an historian, and one of the greatest leaders of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. The late Warren R. “Rudy” Clements truly inspired all who had the privilege to know him. Rudy was a blessin g to the Museum of the American In dian (NMAI) will receive the TWANAT Award. Richard is the Founding Director of NMAI— his visionary leadership led to the creation of the National Mu seum of the American Indian, the Cultural Resources Center in Suitland, Maryland, arid the George Gustav Heye Center in New York City. The world is a better place because of W. Richard West, Jr., and the Indigenous People are the beneficiaries of his devotion and his tireless work on cultural, educational, legal and govern mental issues. He cham pioned projects such as the update of the tribes’ Comprehensive Plan, the Mu seum At Warm Springs, Kah- Nee-Ta High Desert Resort and Casino, the Bridge of the Gods Columbia River Resort and Ca sino, to name a few. He was a great diplomat of the tribes, he worked well with the state, the federal govern ment, adjacent jurisdictions, with other tribes, and was a spiritual leader as well too. He loved his people, and left a legacy that will be felt for generations to come. Mrs. Annabelle Clements and family will be present to accept this award. Meriyah joins brother M artin. The father’s Howlak Tichum Louisa “Tootie” Grace Kalani Louisa “Tootie” Grace Kalani passed away on February 8, 2007 at her home in Warm Springs. She was 70. Mrs. Kalani was born on June 21, 1936 at WineDance, New York to parents Delbert and Jacoba Curtis. She was married to Ronald Kalami in 1962 at Reno, Nev. The couple were married for 44 years. Mrs. Kalani and her family came to Oregon in the 1940s. She knew many people here and took great pride in her work. She very much enjoyed working. Mrs. Kalani is survived by her husband Ron of Warm Springs; daughters Lisa Harber of Corvallis, and Rosanna Kalani of Oakland; grandchildren Jason Kalani and Danielle Harbert, both of Corvallis; and three sisters.
