Conference (Continued from page 1) As Falcon explained, the Rez Watch program is one that aims to bring community members together to fight the meth prob lem in their own communities, som ething they do through forming a more specific version o f a neighborhood watch. “W here does the healing start? Out in the community,” Falcon explained. “That’s why ‘Rez W atch’ is a community- based volunteer program.” A ccording to Falcon, the methamphetamine problem is Open O p& K one that needs to be stopped, and people are more than will ing to do so. “People are sick o f it. They don’t want to see it coming into our reservations anymore,” she said. Candace Shelton, o f Mary land, led a discussion o f meth amphetamine and alcohol use during pregnancy. She agreed that the community needs to come together, but added, “The problem in our communities is that a lot o f times we don’t even want to talk about it.” Falcon said that not talking about it is reason in itself to be concerned. A main reason why metham phetamine is such a serious problem is that the drug is very simple to make. Many ingredi ents can be purchased in stores, although laws have changed, making it harder for the manu facturer. Another problem , Falcon mentioned, is the way in which meth addicts are treated. “They don’t need anymore judgment. They’ve already judging them selves,” she said.
