Members comment on Wintergreen timber sale By Bill Rhoadca for the Spilyay Tymoo An interdisciplinary team from the I'brestry and Natural Resources branches has been collecting tribal member com ments on a timber sale being proposed for 2007. Responses to a number of comments and concerns arc included with this article. The Wintergreen 2007 Tim ber Sale will target approximately 38.2 million board feet of tim ber in the upper Warm Springs River watershed. The harvest approximates the annual allow able cut (recalculated every five years) for this planning unit, which is based on long-term sustainability. The process for planning this sale officially began on July 13 when the project interdiscipli nary team (1'IDT) completed its second and final scoping meet ing with the tribal public. Meet ings were held for Agency, Seekseequa and Simnasho dis tricts, inidating the process to complete a draft plan. A slide show and maps were used to identify potential treat ment areas, which were de scribed by project leader Matt Jimenez and other members of the technical staff. A field re view of the proposed project area, and other recent projects, was conducted during the annual Timber Tour on August 17. There is something for every one to participate in, so come and spend the evening with us. There will be similar pro grams planned at the Agency Longhouse in January, and at the Seekseequa Fire Station in March.
