Program to document tribal art Documentation training in Bend The Oregon I listorical Soci ety is beginning a new collabo rative project between the society's Folklife Program and Oregon's nine federally recog nized Indian tribes called The Oregon Tribes Project. The purpose of the Oregon Tribes Project is to identify and document contemporary Native American folk and traditional artists and art forms, and to preserve primary source mate rials in tribal archives. The Oregon Tribes Project is made possible by funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Oregon Arts Commission. The Oregon Tribes Project begins with a professional docu mentation workshop to train interested tribal members to use photography, video and tape recorded interviews to record their contemporary tribal folk arts and artists. Workshop teachers include Dr. Deanna Kingston, assistant professor of Anthropology at Oregon State University; Bushra Azzouz, documentary filmmaker and professor, Northwest Film Center of the Portland Art Museum; Christine Dupres, Oregon I listorical So ciety Folklife project coordina tor; Evan Schneider, historical society staff photographer, and Nancy Ntisz, Folklife director of the historical society. Arts Central, the regional arts and culture council of Central Oregon, has arranged for the documentation workshops to take place in Bend in October and November. After completing the work shop training, tribal members will work for seven months documenting artistic traditions within their tribes. These materials will be depos ited in tribal archives with ap propriate copies going to the Oregon Historical Society. The society will offer a pres ervation workshop in summer 2(M)6 and partners will gather to discuss proceeding with a larger project that will build upon the documentation.
