October brings
many fun activities
The return to fall brings a
number of fun events in and
around Warm Springs.
Every Monday and Tuesday
in October there will be crafts
and cooking at Carol's Room at
the Warm Springs Community
Center, from 3:30 to 6 p.m.
Halloween craft-making is each
Monday, and a Halloween
treats-cooking class is each Tues
day. A pumpkin patch trip is
scheduled for Oct. 14, and the
Great Pumpkin Party is Oct. 19,
at the community center.
A Halloween-themcd movie
is Oct. 26.
Halloween day in particular
will be full of fun activities. A
Halloween Carnival is set for
Monday, Oct. 31, at the com
munity center gym.
Powwow, costume contest
The Simnasho Halloween
Powwow is set for Oct. 31, and
the Annual Costume Contest is
scheduled from noon to 1 p.m.
on Halloween at Warm Springs
Community Center Social I fall.
The Simnasho Halloween
Powwow begins at 5:30 on Hal
loween evening, with a gather
ing of all goblins at the
longhouse, followed by trick-or-treating
around the loop.
Then at 6:30 p.m. is the pof
luck dinner at the longhouse. At
7:30 will be games, costume
contest for tiny tots, grade
school, junior and senior high,
and adult.

come to join the Halloween
Costume Contest at the commu
nity center. There will be prizes
for different categories. There
will be refreshments as well.

Project Graduation Can and Bottle Drive: Satur
day, Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m. at Erickson's Sentry
Market parking lot. Proceeds help fund the senior all-night
drug and alcohol free party for the graduating class of 2006.

Program to document tribal art
Documentation
training in Bend
The Oregon I listorical Soci
ety is beginning a new collabo
rative project between the
society's Folklife Program and
Oregon's nine federally recog
nized Indian tribes called The
Oregon Tribes Project.
The purpose of the Oregon
Tribes Project is to identify and
document contemporary Native
American folk and traditional
artists and art forms, and to
preserve primary source mate
rials in tribal archives.
The Oregon Tribes Project is
made possible by funding from
the National Endowment for
the Arts and the Oregon Arts
Commission.
The Oregon Tribes Project
begins with a professional docu
mentation workshop to train
interested tribal members to use
photography, video and tape
recorded interviews to record
their contemporary tribal folk
arts and artists.
Workshop teachers include
Dr. Deanna Kingston, assistant
professor of Anthropology at
Oregon State University;
Bushra Azzouz, documentary
filmmaker and professor,
Northwest Film Center of the
Portland Art Museum; Christine
Dupres, Oregon I listorical So
ciety Folklife project coordina
tor; Evan Schneider, historical
society staff photographer, and
Nancy Ntisz, Folklife director
of the historical society.
Arts Central, the regional arts
and culture council of Central
Oregon, has arranged for the
documentation workshops to
take place in Bend in October
and November.
After completing the work
shop training, tribal members
will work for seven months
documenting artistic traditions
within their tribes.
These materials will be depos
ited in tribal archives with ap
propriate copies going to the
Oregon Historical Society.
The society will offer a pres
ervation workshop in summer
2(M)6 and partners will gather to
discuss proceeding with a larger
project that will build upon the
documentation.
