Spilyqy Tymoo, Wqrm Springs, Oregon August 18, 2005 Pvige S Deputies to patrol at Chemawa (AI) - The federal Hurcau of Indian Affairs might have found its answer for security at the Chemawa Indian School -the Marion County Sheriff's Office. Through a recent agreement, the sheriffs office would pro vide security under a 5261,000 contract that would expire in August 2006. There is an option to renew the deal for another four years, the Salem Statesman Journal newspaper reported. The money would pay the salaries of three new sheriff's deputies and finance gang pre vention and substance abuse programs. It would also pay for anger management and conflict resolution classes at the school. County officials said there is a renewed focus on safety at the school because of the Decem ber 2003 death of a Warm Springs girl who died of acute alcohol poisoning while she was locked in a holding cell. The school currently has no securiry on campus, county of ficials said. The Bureau of Indian Affairs handled security at Chemawa for many years, but stopped in January when it was learned they had no authority to do so. In February, the bureau tried to improve security by erecting an 8-foot, razor-wire fence around the school. Protests from students and school board members led to its removal. The boarding school, which has roughly 425 students, is con sidered a government jurisdic tion that only the Federal Bu reau of Investigation and the US. Marshals Service have the authority to police. Under the contract, sheriff's deputies would receive commis sions from the U.S. Marshals Service.
