Love, Ermenio and Brit New vehicles for police department By Brian Mortensen Spilyny Tymoo The Warm Springs Police Department got a bit of a makeover during its biggest weekend, Pi-Umc-Sha week end. The police department traded in five high-mileage police vehicles for four 2005 Ford Crown Victorias and one 2005 Ford Explorer. The new vehicles arc sil ver, with the police depart ment logo, replacing an older set of green Crown Victorias. "We budgeted for the ve hicles. Most of our vehicles were very high-mileage, at 150,000-plus miles on them," Warm Springs police chief Jim Soulcs said. 'They were spending more time in the shop getting repaired than they were on the road, so we budgeted for these vehicles." The trade became final on June 24, the day before the Pi-Umc-Sha celebration. "If t i A . . t ; --r z7j'- O Sgt. Dennis White shows off a we had not been able to get those outfitted and going, we would have been hurting," Soulcs said. I Ic said that he and the de partment have received positive comments about the look of the new cars. Along with the cars themselves, the force was out fitted with new gray uniform Brim MortnnSpllyay brand-new police vehicle. shirts and black slacks, "and the shirt and the cars match," Soulcs said. A dealership in The Dalles was the low bidder out of sev eral local dealerships vying for the contract to replace the po lice cars. Soulcs said a police depart ment generally rotates vehicles every three to five years. "Generally, they're evalu ated on their mileage," he said. "They get driven hard and around the clock, so they begin to break down more. About 100,000 miles is the limit." The special features re quired of a police car, includ ing dashboard panels and protection from the back seat, cost about $5,(HK). The new Explorer is placed at the police department's station in Simnasho. Along with the brand-new vehicles, the department has two 2004 cars it received ear lier this year, and two older Crown Victorias, while Cor rections officers at the Warm Springs Jail use an older Crown .Victoria. The police department is 22 strong, Soulcs said, not counting detectives and cor rections officers. I . ' T- - '- i ...
