False 'memo 9 not by police
The Warm Springs Police
Department recently received a
letter from an anonymous per
son regarding informants used
during narcotics investigations.
This letter was in the form
of a false memorandum alleg
edly written by the Police De
partment to the Warm Springs
Tribal Prosecutions Office. The
contents of the memorandum
included names of persons who
arc living, or have lived, in the
Warm Springs area. The
"memorandum" also listed
these people as being informants.
The document was false, and
was in no way, shape or form
generated by the Warm Springs
Police Department. The people
whose names appear in the
document are not being used as
informants. The Warm Springs
Police Department assures the
community the department is
not taking this incident lightly.
The incident is being inves
tigated and community mem
bers who have knowledge of the
origin of this memorandum are
urged to contact the police de
partment investigations division
at a confidential line, 553-7012.
Cooks featured at Bite of Oregon
Kah-Nee-Ta High Desert
Resort and Casino, and the food
the resort cooks prepare, will be
on display before thousands of
people on Portland's waterfront
at the 2005 Bite of Oregon, the
annual showcase of food, drink
and music.
The Bite, as it's usually
known, is Aug. 5-7 at Tom
McCall Waterfront Park.
Kah-Nee-Ta is sponsor of
this year's event, which is a ben
efit for Oregon Special Olym
pics. Kah-Nee-Ta will host a res
taurant booth, where staff will
prepare fry bread and other
dishes, and executive chef Steve
Head will demonstrate his cook
ing craft at the Chef's Palate
Stage.
Kah-Nee-Ta is also a spon
sor of Sunday's headlining per
formance by legendary rockers
John Kay and Stcppcnwolf.
Kah-Nee-Ta general man
ager Garland Brunoe said the
resort and casino have never be
fore sponsored the Bite of Or
egon, but that he and the Kah-Nce-Ta
board found the idea of
having the resort's name dis
played before an estimated
80,000 people each day appeal
ing. "If I didn't think it would
work, I wouldn't' have put it on
the agenda before our chair
man," he said. "When you're
talking about that many people
in area, having Kah-Nee-Ta's
name in front of them, it's a
good thing"
The Museum at Warm
Springs will also have a display
at the Bite of Oregon, and some
tribal cultural performances will
be on one of the Bite's several
' stages.

New vehicles for police department
By Brian Mortensen
Spilyny Tymoo
The Warm Springs Police
Department got a bit of a
makeover during its biggest
weekend, Pi-Umc-Sha week
end. The police department
traded in five high-mileage
police vehicles for four 2005
Ford Crown Victorias and
one 2005 Ford Explorer.
The new vehicles arc sil
ver, with the police depart
ment logo, replacing an older
set of green Crown
Victorias.
"We budgeted for the ve
hicles. Most of our vehicles
were very high-mileage, at
150,000-plus miles on them,"
Warm Springs police chief
Jim Soulcs said. 'They were
spending more time in the
shop getting repaired than
they were on the road, so we
budgeted for these vehicles."
The trade became final on
June 24, the day before the
Pi-Umc-Sha celebration. "If

we had not been able to get
those outfitted and going, we
would have been hurting,"
Soulcs said.
I Ic said that he and the de
partment have received positive
comments about the look of the
new cars. Along with the cars
themselves, the force was out
fitted with new gray uniform

shirts and black slacks, "and the
shirt and the cars match," Soulcs
said.
A dealership in The Dalles
was the low bidder out of sev
eral local dealerships vying for
the contract to replace the po
lice cars.
Soulcs said a police depart
ment generally rotates vehicles
every three to five years.
"Generally, they're evalu
ated on their mileage," he
said. "They get driven hard
and around the clock, so they
begin to break down more.
About 100,000 miles is the
limit."
The special features re
quired of a police car, includ
ing dashboard panels and
protection from the back
seat, cost about $5,(HK).
The new Explorer is
placed at the police
department's station in
Simnasho.
Along with the brand-new
vehicles, the department has
two 2004 cars it received ear
lier this year, and two older
Crown Victorias, while Cor
rections officers at the Warm
Springs Jail use an older
Crown .Victoria.
The police department is
22 strong, Soulcs said, not
counting detectives and cor
rections officers.
