Scant snowfall, warm weather may spell drought for region (AP) - After a season of scant snowfall and a recent spate of warm days, experts say Cen tral Oregon could be on track for the worst drought in more than a decade. That would mean trouble for farmers and irrigation. "I'm doing my rain dance right now," said Jeremy Giffin, Deschutes Basin watermaster. "It would take a historical event to bring us up to normal at this point" As of last week, the Deschutes River Basin held only 57 percent of the average mois ture for this time of year, said Jon Lea, snow survey supervi sor for the federal Natural Re sources Conservation Service. The water shortage could limit hydro-electric operations this year, although that's unlikely to have a major effect on elec tricity prices, according to a power company spokesmen. Dave Kvamme, spokesman for Pacific Power, said hydro power makes up only about 5 percent of the company's total supply. Pacific Power is the pri mary electricity provider for most of Central Oregon. Kuu-Nauxsh wins weekend tourney By Brian Mortenscn Spilyay Tymoo It might not have needed a lot of three-point plays during the weekend, but the Kuu Nauxsh team, comprised of mostly players from Warm Springs and the Yakama Indian Reservation, had enough to win the North End Express Men's All-Indian Six-foot-and-under Basketball Tournament at the Warm Springs Community Cen ter Friday and Saturday. Kuu-Nauxsh, which means "And One," won all four of its games, including a 98-66 victory over Tha' Slicks in the champi onship game Saturday evening. James Bailey, who lives in Spokane, led Kuu-Nauxsh with 25 points in the championship game and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Bailey, 26, showed a good range of athleticism in running the floor and solid range from outside, scored 12 points in the first half as Kuu-Nauxsh led, 45 31. The games were played in halves of 20 minutes in running time. "This is a way-faster pace than I'm used to, " Bailey, who plays in three different recre ational leagues in the Spokane Post Falls-Coeur d'Alcne area, said. "The league up there is more half-court set. They don't run or push it as much as the Indian tournaments. "It takes me a while to ad just. They always want you to push it and take it to the hole." Bailey, who is a full-blooded Ojibway, smiled as he said that was part of the reason he missed a dunk in the second half. Kuu-Nauxsh was able to start running early and took a 21-10 lead eight minutes into the final game, but Tha' Slicks were able to cut the lead to 28-25 with five minutes left in the first half. A pair of buckets by team captain Shawn Harry keyed an 8-0 Kuu Nauxsh run to go up, 36-25, and then scored nine straight points just before the half ended, in cluding a three-point play by Bailey to go up, 45-29. The teams played even to start the second half until Kuu Nauxsh went on a 13-2 run to go up, 73-45, with about 10 min utes to go in the game. Kuu-Nauxsh took its biggest lead near the end of the con test, when, with the game no longer in doubt, the teams slowed the pace considerably and traded three-point attempts, at 85-63. Kuu-Nauxsh's last four buckets were three-pointers. David White scored 20 points in the championship game for Kuu-Nauxsh, while post Phil Rigdon had 16 and Harry 15. Tommy Garcia led Tha' Slicks with 16 points, Floyd Frank had 12 and Aaron Greene and Preston Tom each had 10. Tha' Slicks reached the cham pionship game by beating the Northwest Bailers, 78-58, in the final of the consolation bracket. The Northwest Bailers finished third, while Da'Click finished fourth. Northwest Bailers, a team Bailey usually plays for, came up through the consolation bracket after losing to Kuu-Nauxsh in the opening round. The host North End Express went 2-2 in the tournament and was one of the Northwest Bailers' victims in the consola tion bracket.
