"E Coosb EEWA: The way it is Page 4- Spilyay Tymoo June 13, 2002 Another school year gone by By Tina Aguilar Spilyay Tymoo staff Wow, another school year com pleted. This year's Madras High School Seniors had graduation on June 1 and the Jefferson County Middle School gave their awards to their stu dents. June 5, the Warm Springs El ementary had the fourth grade gradu ation ceremony with approximately 85 students involved. What a year. The upcoming new school year will see a lot of changes for those kids, who have never been to any school where they are the minority. It is a complete shock to see other students other than those of their own culture and traditions. It is another shock to see young people with two parents, as grandparents or extended families are raising most of our kids. So it seems, because they've been raised a "certain" way, it is hard to adjust when entering the fifth grade. In years past to the present, I've seen teachers degrade our kidscul ture because they themselves are ig norant of the traditions andor cul ture. I've seen teachers, counselors and aides lump us all in one negative category and leave no room for change. I've seen bus drivers and prin cipals turn away when one of our kids was getting picked on verbally and physically. But when it came to our kid(s) defending themselves, it's our kids that were reprimanded. I've seen and heard our kids being called liars, troublemakers (because of the last name and family they come from), dumb and a lot other names that were negative. Then the school district wonders why it is so hard for our Native American children to con tinue with their education and gradu ate. I think the school district person nel need more than one night of In dian dancing to become enlightened to our way of life. On the other hand, I have come across some teachers who are fantas tic with each student. They are few but they do make a difference in the molding of our children. They give unselfishly, putting the needs of oth ers before themselves. I've seen coun selors who are full of compassion and . hurt right along with you if you are hurting. I've rarely seen a principal who is so committed to hisher job that they know each and every child's name and the family they come from. We want our kids to be able to ad just to make it in the "real" world without much change but if we keep ourselves separated and set apart from the rest of the world, we're being just as ignorant as they arc. Maybe one day soon the color of our skin won't matter, or what family we are from or the way we dress, wear our hair, talk or how much money wc have (or don't have) or what our parents do for a living. Maybe one day none of that will be a part of how others see us, and we'll each see one another as God sees us. And still be able to get along with each other, faults and all. Hut hey, that's only my opinion. . The Spilyay encourages organi zations and individuals to send no tices of events that are of interest to the VC'arm Springs community. Spilyay Speaks I'm sorry mom Hi, my name is Jennifer Smith. I would like to apologize to my mom, Mary Danzuka for what happened on March 26, 02. We are writing to say a special Thank You to all who were responsible for plan ning such a wonderful evening for 509-J employees and families. It was encouraging to see many of our ad ministrators, teachers and educational assistants, along with their spouses and children in attendance at this spe cial cultural event. (The prizes were great, too.) Again, thank you to everyone who worked hard to make the evening so special. Thanks also to the Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Joint Educa tion Committee, the Tribal Educa tion Committee, Title VII, and the Johnson O'Malley Committee. Everette and Phyllis Griffith Please return horse Back in 1995 my husband pur chased a horse for our daughter's birthday, ut-wye Bridgctte Camille Parra. Bridgette passed over in May 96. Well everyone in the Wolfe Point area knew that the white horse was our daughter's and left it alone. Bridgette's horse had two colts, one was killed by a neighbor's two dogs, the other buckskin colored colt roamed Wolf Point with its mother. Other people began building in the Wolf Point area that weren't aware of this horse being our property and rounded up Bridgett's horse two years ago during Pi-Ume-Sha and branded it with "BH". Well our poor buck skin colored colt made its way home and was scared, dirty, and sad look ing. I heard through the Indian grape vine who the brand belonged to and called their home and left a message for these people to please leave my daughter's buckskin colt alone. Well last year during Pi-Ume-Sha, during their annual round up, our daughter's buckskin color horse with the erroneous "BH" brand on it was stolen again. This time it didn't come home. We were busy with my father so trying to locate the colt was not a priority. Our daughter's horse never made- Birthday wishes, anniversaries, Father's Day Happy Fathers Day to Mike Kalama. Hiring practices People of Warm Springs, I was reading the May 16 Tymoo edition when I came across the article on "Kah-Nee-Ta adopts tribal mem ber hiring program" for the high desert resort and casino. I got to think ing about all the ones who were hired and let go. In the article it mentions "we have funding for training for tribal members only." I know that they're hiring the people, but it seems that they are making sure that the ones they hire are sure to fail, so they can keep the key positions for them selves. As an employee of Kah-Nee-Ta, I see tribal members with little or no work history applying for lad der positions. They are hired imme diately to meet the criteria set forth by the board of directors which is "to recruit and employ tribal members at Kah-Nee-Ta, and to provide train ing for work in the gaming and hos pitality industry." People who seem to be able to think for themselves are very few in so proud of you. Ixve you a lot. Love your mommy, Stacy Fasthorse. Happy 21" Birthday Paulette R. Henry I wish you a happy day & many more! And I sure hope you have fun not that You are of age. Ixve always & for ever, Na-Na Jolenc & Chip Happy Birthday Auntie Paulette. Lots of love your nieces Lauren, Lexis & Queen Elizabeth. Thank-you, Jolenc Happy 15,h Birthday on June 13, to Ashley Marie with love from your sister Lancda Sherene and your cous ins Tonya Ixigh and Ixanna Elsie. Happy Birthday, Running Bear. Hope you had a good one. The Spi lyay Staff. Happy Birthday Ashley Marie, June 13. With love, auntie Selena, Tony, George, Tonya, Leannu and Jackson. Happy birthday Tracy R. Sam. Iivc Gram and (tramps Pat Brown, 30. hnc Sis and I larvcy Jim number, in these key positions. So what I am saying the Kitchen Man agement is hiring tribal members that have little or no education to fill these positions, and letting them go as fast as they are being hired. Then they pick non-tribal members with the work history to fill these positions and at the same time show a ledger of these tribal members who were hired and fired to show that we, the tribal members, still need them (Kitchen Management) to run OUR resort. In closing I feel that the Tribal Members that want the jobs and want to work are getting pushed to their limits. When they want a meeting with the supervisors it's like pulling teeth to even get their attention, so this leads to Kitchen Management not wanting to deal with tribal members, and as a result they get their ledger and the tribal members get termi nated. Garrett Suppah Sr., Kitchen Staff and Tribal Member Hello, from Pastor Rick Just the other day I was reading an article in Scientific America maga zine. It spoke of two medical studies. It seems people are wired in the brain to look for short term patterns, real or imagined. When shown random circles and squares the brain really lights up the MRI machine in the front thinking part of the brain. Our brain tries to memorize and understand the pattern of things even when there is no pattern. Now what does this mean to us? Well, someone' might ask, "Why do people after a string of losses at gambling think they are due to win, and make a larger wager? 1 . . . . .;, It seems we humans will see a pat tern that will bring us winnings that does not exist. It is really bad when we decide to bet again within a few seconds after losing. Our Creator has wired us to lose quicker the faster we gamble. Ask the Lord in prayer why? So what docs that mean? If you must gamble, gamble slowly. Gambling is random chance. Remember, gam bling is a head game, ha, ha.. News from the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church. Vacation Bible School will be June 17-21.
