?f Spilyay Sports PageS Spilyay Tymoo tenuity 10, 2002 Madras girls take third place at Redmond holiday tournament By Reina Estimo Spilyay Intern In the opening round of the Redmond Holiday Classic Tourna ment the Madras Girls Varsity team got a victory over the Canby Cougars who is a 4A school in the Pac-9 con ference. The Girls Varsity team took an 18 22 lead at the half, exchanging bas kets late in the second quarter with j the Lady Cougars. Due to poor weather and road conditions, only the f second half of this game was ob- , .served. Madras came into the second half with intense defensive pressure caus ing streaks two and three turnovers for Canby in the open court. Nei ther team scored in the first two min utes of the third quarter but freshman Jaylyn Suppah sparked a 10-2 Madras run in the third quarter when she was fouled in the post and scored the first point of the quarter with a free throw. Even though Madras was plagued with poor foul shooting throughout this quarter, shooting 17 percent, they were still able to maintain a 32-20 lead at the end of the third quarter. To start the fourth quarter Canby put on a little defensive pressure of their own causing two Madras turnovers. Many participate in 25th Annual bowling tournament Tribal members and others partici pated recently in the 25th Annual Warm Sprints Indian Holiday Bowl ing Tournament. Uh-Oh's Stella Webstsr and Jim Webster of Fsrmlngton , New Mexico; and Doris Yazzie and Ravis Yazzie ol Klamath Canby was unable to convert the turnovers and half way through the fourth quarter Madras had built their lead to 41-23 with four minutes re maining to play. Thirty seconds later all of Madras' starters got a rest as five players from the bench checked in to finish the game. In the final 3 and a half minutes the depth of the Madras bench outscored Canby 7-4 and ex hibited solid defensive plays. The Madras team played aggressive defense but only committed one foul to Canby's ten in the second half. Madras had three players in double digits: Nicole Main, 10, Tosha Wil son, 10, J are Retherford, 12. Fresh man Jaylyn Suppah contributed 8. Lady Buffs then moved into the second round in the winners bracket where they faced the host team Redmond Panthers. The Panthers handed the Lady Buffs their second loss of the season in this game win ning 61-52. The game was a better game than the score demonstrates with numer ous lead changes. The Panthers were able to get their largest lead at the end of the fourth quarter. The first quar ter was very fast paced with the girls varsity scoring numerous transition baskets! Sheila Wahneeta - Austin Greene but went on a 6-1 run to tie Redmond 12-12 after one quarter of play. In the second quarter the largest Redmond lead was four points at the midway point. After two quarters of play Redmond was up pn the Lady Buffs 25-23. . Madras regained the lead in the third quarter outscoring the Pan thers by eight points. The Buffs scored six points in the final minute of the quarter and took the momen tum entering the fourth quarter with a 44-38 lead. The game until this point was very aggressive with both teams in the bonus after the first minute of the fourth quarter. With four minutes ef in the game ' Redmond had regained the lead from ' Madras 51-50. Redmond then scored 10 points to Madras' two in the final four minutes and won the game 61-52. Final stats read that the fouls and free-throws hurt the Lady Buffs as Redmond scored 26 of their 61 points off of made free-throws. '" Madras continued the tournament in the Consolation Championship game against the Ashland Lady Griz zlies, 4A High School out of the Southern Oregon Conference. After the first quarter of play Madras was leading 12-n. . After two quarters of play the Lady Buffs increased their one point lead to a four point lead that gave them a 23-19 lead at the half. - Tosha Wilson hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Lady Buffs a four point lead after the third quarter. Ashland got one chance at the end of the fourth quarter when their junior post missed a 4-footer that would have given Ashland the lead with :08 left in the game. . Madras Junior Point Guard Tosha Wilson got the rebound and held onto it tight wherf she got fouled. Madras maintained possession for the rest of the game and won 55-54.
