By Reina Estimo
Spilyay Intern
In the opening round of the
Redmond Holiday Classic Tourna
ment the Madras Girls Varsity team
got a victory over the Canby Cougars
who is a 4A school in the Pac-9 con
ference. The Girls Varsity team took an 18
22 lead at the half, exchanging bas
kets late in the second quarter with
j the Lady Cougars. Due to poor
weather and road conditions, only the
f second half of this game was ob-
, .served.
Madras came into the second half
with intense defensive pressure caus
ing streaks two and three turnovers
for Canby in the open court. Nei
ther team scored in the first two min
utes of the third quarter but freshman
Jaylyn Suppah sparked a 10-2 Madras
run in the third quarter when she was
fouled in the post and scored the first
point of the quarter with a free throw.
Even though Madras was plagued
with poor foul shooting throughout
this quarter, shooting 17 percent, they
were still able to maintain a 32-20 lead
at the end of the third quarter.
To start the fourth quarter Canby
put on a little defensive pressure of
their own causing two Madras turnovers.
