Years ago it was proclaimed as Memorial Day, to honor all those who gave their lives in battle and later on broadened to include fam ily members. This day was set aside to honor solders who died during wartime. Today the younger generation may have no idea or understanding of what Memorial Day really means. Today Memorial Day is just a three-. day weekend, and perhaps looked as a kick off of all the summer holi days, the picnics, outings and travel. There are still many here who really know what Memorial Day Daniel Iiarl Chavez, age 24 years passed away March 19, 2001 at the St. Charles Medical Center due to an extended illness. Chavez was born December 14, 1976 at Vancouver, Washington to parents John Chavez and Earlynne Sijuiemphcn. He was a lifelong Central Oregon resident and an enrolled member of the Con federated Tribes Warm Springs. Chavez married Joie (Simtustus) Olsen Meanus Sr. passed away on March 3 at Mount View Hospital. He was 62 years old. Today when I hear the Star Spangled Manner, I get a lump in my throat, as I remember friends who didn't come home from the battle field. Today there are people who don't believe in removing their hat, or standing at attention during the play of the National Anthem; this sick ens me, because they never had to Daniel Earl Chavez on November 7, 1997 at the I Id le Longhouse at Warm Springs. They made their home in Madras with their daughter. He was employed as a records clerk for the Confederated Tribes. Survivors include his parents, John Chavez and Earlynne Squiemphen of Warm Springs, his wife Joie of Madras, daughter Thyreicia Chavez also of Madras and Olson Meanus Simnasho.
