4 March 13, 1997 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo E Coosh EEWA: 77ze vray r w There was a question floating q around on if Marijuana should be legalized for sale over the counter?Thatquestion brought all kinds of questions and comments pro and con. Many people say Cigarettes are drugs just like Marijuana, some say it is used for medical purposes; some Indian Tribes claim its is used in their religious ceremonies. The pusher I'm sure would say no, because it would cut into their fast buck they make at the present time. Well, let's see, if people feel cigarettes are drugs and are legal over the counter, than why not Marijuana? I don t know how it is used for medical purposes, but there must be some way they use it for that purpose.. But as far as for being used for religious reasons, I've never heard of it used around this area. We have our own religious beliefs without the use of Marijuana or drugs. Today because Marijuana is illegal to be sold over the counter like cigarettes, this poses a challenge for the user.. Get by the law without being cought. This creates a game like thing among the user's to get by the law by doing something un-lawful for their kicks and it probably makes them feel like big shots or something by using Marijuana. Some people say, they don' t know what people get out of using Marijuana. They say it doesn't do anything for them when they tried to use Marijuana but give them a big head ache. The pushers say, "You've used the wrong stuff." You must try something else thats better. But even when they try to use the better stuff it still just gives them a big head ache and gives them the conclusion that it's all in one's head when using Marijuana.. So who's to say that it's great to use Marijuana, like they say there is something for everyone. What ever turns you on, Some people that do not use the stuff say people just put on an act when they are under the use of Marijuana. Pretend to be high and all that stuff. The use of Marijuana just to impress someone. Read once where in China, they put the pusher in front of the firing squad and excited him for pushing drugs. Maybe that's what they should do here, line-um up and shoot-um like dogs. O'well, just heard that term in a rip-roaring western movie one time. Well, like they say, If it does have some kind of an effect and does give people some kind of thrilL.than it could cause a person to go for broke just to get the stuff. It could turn people to, "Beg, Barrow and Steal," just to get some "GOOOOD-STUFF! ! They would be hocking all their possessions, stealing from their Aunt, Cheating on different things to get enough to get a, like they say, "A Hit." What ever that means. Then there are some people who don't even take to smoking Cigarettes, they say all it does for them is give them bad breath. All the things said about Marijuana is con implied because people who use the stuff would not comment on what they use the stuff for. And as far as for religious reasons I don't know of anyone around here that takes to using Marijuana in the religion. But I guess what ever turns you on....AHH-NAH-CHI-TOON!!! Member recalls parent's teaching To the editor, Thank you before I express my self for allowing mc this space to reach the Spilyay readers. I have so much to be thankful for. Among them are the lives of many. I am especially thankful to have known and have had a spiritual impact from the long life of "Grandma" Pauline Johnson. I am grateful to her for being there for my brother Curtis Brown's daughters Debbie, Mrs. Toba Scott's wife and her namesake Pauline "Punkin" Allen. To my nieces, I am so sorry that I was not there for you but there is not a doubt in my mind that Granny is now enjoying her reward. I am forever happy to see my brother-in-law enjoying each new day, Ray Shike Sr. He is the iron horse for his family. My niece Marclla Sam has a son, Robert Jr. Robert always gave of himself, expressively. How he would sing and dance all night long at the medicine singing. It didn't matter who was singing, Lil Robert was there. Very suddenly Robert couldn't talk at all. We, the family thought it was a passing virus until months later he still wasn't talking. By now we sought many doctors. It was specu lated that he may have cancer of the esophagus. Robert never lost faith, Thanks given To the editor, To Eileen Spino and Lucille Schuster, I just want to say a great big "Thank you" to them, For all the care and help they provide on the Senior's trips! It was at the Up per Dry Creek Longhouse that Lil Robert sought help from the Indian Medicine people. Prayers in song were conducted before many wit nesses. Some of those wonderful people are no longer with us but I like to appreciate them humbly. Prunic, Soo, and the singers Silas, Wayawewa, Beans, Gcri, Maryann, Lucinda, Larry, Nelson, Uncle Sam, Daisy, Manny and Tom Bcgay. Tom Begay made special Indian medicine and placed it in a pouch for Lil Rob ert to wear around his neck. Lil' Robert was involved in the Agency Longhouse Sunday services and was always happy. He had spent some time at the University hospital to no avail. By now he had no tonsils or adenoids and still he couldn't talk. After one of the medicine Indian Doctor singing at Nelson's Longhouse, Lil' Robert was dancing and clearly told me" I can't hceearrr you." Ever since then we can't turn Lil Robert off. It is at times like these that it becomes confusing when the people we look up to behave in the manner that they do. At the Agency Longhouse during a funeral, a song was sung (feather religion), this per son threw his drum and walked out. Lil Robert was dancing, he turned to me and said "Why did he do that?" I answered "for they know not what they do." Lil Robert said it to himself and said, "That's what God said when he was hanging on the cross ennit Grandma." I called him and sang the song to him. Ah-ya-ya-yat, Wa pow nee, Wow nak shush, how beautiful, all dressed up this body is! over and over again, I sang it until he under stood it. Yes, Grandson, your faith must never falter when you witness these actions of one of our most prominent and prestigious men. It takes mc to remember my parent's teaching to judge not, believe in all faiths where God's name is men tioned, Indian or non-Indian and I repeat all these teachings to my chil dren. I am deeply grateful to KWSO for hiring Lil Robert even if he is still struggling to talk. It is the most beau tiful sound to hear Lil Robert talking. Thank you staff of KWSO. You have made one little boy's dream come true. Sincerely, Grandma Neda Wesley Tournament postponed To the editor, To the coaches, players, sponsors and all interested parties, our 9th Annual Blackwolfc Prevention 6' 1 Men's Basketball Tournament will be postponed (we're hoping to rcschedulcin the fall) due to unfore seen circumstances and illnesses. Every year we strive to make this tournament one of the best in the Northwest area. So we have decided, rather to have it in April (as we have done 8 years now) and do a half done job this year, we want to keep it at top form and give it our full attention for a later date. If you have items to donate for our raffle or would like to sponsor any of the awards or even if you are inter ested in helping with the tournament, please contact any one of the Tour ney Directors (listed below). Your involvement will be greatly appreci ated. We will get back to everyone after we decide on an actual date. Thanks for all the interest shown to keep this tournament an on-going annual event.
