"The girls came out and played great team and individual defense. We needed this win and to play defense the way we did was a good sign for us," stated John Peterson. Wilsonville had trouble with the White Buffs defense and had 29 turnovers because of the full-court press Madras unveiled for the first time this year. Madras' Amy Hawes had six steals to lead her team in take-aways. Taralcc Suppah lead the way in scoring for the White Buffs with 15 points, with 10 coming in the first quarter. Abby Nyara added 10. The win brought the Buffs Tri Valley record to 4-1, and overall record to 7-4. Angeles. Larson has been playing on the Indian basketball tournament circuit for the past twelve years. Larson stated, "I enjoy coming to Warm Springs and playing because this is a great basketball community, and the competition is great." He adding, "The reason I held the basketball clinic was because it was close to the Holiday Tournament and I had some friends who asked if I would play with Swinomish. Then, Andy Leonard asked if I would put the clinic on. My sister lives in Bend, so I said yes. "My main goal for the clinic was to teach the youth most of the basics like passing, dribbling and shooting. With the clinic being just one day we did not get a chance to work on any defensive drills." The camp was broken into two session w ith the morning session for nine to 1 2 year olds and the afternoon session for 13-17 year olds. There were about 20 to 30 youth participated in the one-day camp. Members and prospective members are encouraged to attend. Golf Pro Joe Rauschenburg Exercise motivates Christensen Exerciser for the month of December 1997 is Bill Christensen. When asked what type of exercises he is doing, Christensen stated, "I have a rare disease called Meriere's Syndrome, in which episodes of severe dizziness and loss of balance occur. I have not had an attack in over a year. I still have a ringing in my right ear and my balance is unstable, so when exercising I need to hold on to something to keep my balance. I bought a walking machine and did not use it very much until I received encouragement from Tyrone Ike, when I joined his fitness team in November. Since November first, I started to walk about 15 minutes in the morning and at night. Now I am up to 30 minutes instead of 15 minutes." Christensen stated, "My motivation was my health due to my smoking habit. My coughing got worse and my attempts to quit didn't work. winning streak and Jon Klos each scored 1 1 points Eric Lincrud lead The Dalles tr and Jon Klos each scored 1 1 points. Lnc Lincrud lead I he Dalles in scoring with 23 points. Madras coach Evan Brown stated, "We forced a lot of turnovers and scored off of them, but when wc had turnovers they could not score off of them. This was a great team effort and I thought the kids played well. Klos had a good defensive effort, Cordcs passed the ball well and Miller had a great shooting night." Brown added, "Wc have gotten better as a team, but now wc need to stay at that level. The second part of the season is always tough because teams arc ready to play you and with us being the second ranked team in the state most of the teams will be up to play us." Madras will play Gladcstonc Thrusday 1 6, at the Buffs home court tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. for Buff boys and our hot shooting pretty much busted it." Madras shot 67 percent for the game, making 16 of 24 from the field, including eight of ten from the three point arc. The win puts Madras, 4-1 in Tri Vallcy, and 8-2 overall, right behind first place Wilsonville, 5-1 . On Saturday, II, the White Buffs hosted Ringwood, Australia, and won. Madras was behind at half-time, but Scott Riddle and Brian Miller, scored seven and five points, in the third quarter respectfully to give the Buffs an 40-36 lead going onto the fourth. Madras was lead in scoring by Riddle with 23 points. Gerald Rico had eight points and five rebounds That's when I noticed Tyrone Ike put up a sign-up sheet for the November Fitness Challenge, I choose November 1 , as a date to stop smoking and start to exercising on that date. Since that day I have not smoked and have been working out regularly. Tyrone Ike, Charles Nathan and Picrson Mitchell helped me with efforts in trying to stop smoking, I would like to thank them." Personal benefits are great for Christensen. "What I have benefited for exercising is that once I started to commit myself to exercise it helped me quit smoking at the same time. The two efforts seem to go hand in hand, I have more strength in my legs, I walk better, my overall health is improving and I have lost five pounds." Christcnsen's goal for exercising is to lose ten more pounds so he can reach his ideal weight for his size. Christcnsen's stumbling blocks are finding time to exercise when he is tired and has other commitments. Bill's advice on how to avoid those blocks are to stay committed to exercising. When asked if he had any other hobbies, Christensen stated, "Walking to the Pari-Mutucl window at the race track." "I prefer to exercise by myself," stated Christensen Christensen stated, "Although I can't specifically state the reason it has been effective, but I feel that exercising at the same time as quitting smoking has complemented each other and has helped me to stay motivated to stick with both. "I feel a lot better from exercising and once it becomes a part of your daily routine, it's not hard to motivate yourself to continue each day," concluded Christensen. - J - u i
