SpilyayTymoo Warm Springs, Oregon June 20, 1996 9 Four employees receive Associates of Arts degrees By Jane Klrkpatrick You may have heard them shout last Friday night, June 14th, all the way from the COCC commencement ceremonies in Bend. Fouremplovees of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs received their Associates of Arts degrees (hat night, an event well worth shouting about. The four Vivian Wewa, Gladys Squiemphen, Becky Brunoe and Nancy Yubeta wore the cap and gown as signs of their commitment to education and their perseverance to a goal that began several years ago. With the support of their employer the Early Childhood Education department the Confederated Tribes, Central Oregon Community College, their families and their own efforts taking evening and summer courses, the four completed classes in math, English, humanities and the sciences. Along the way, they took additional course work in Early Childhood Education that added to their professional competence. And they worked full time. Another tribal member, Rosa Graybael, will complete her AA degree this summer and wear the cap and gown at COCC next June. "We are very proud of the work these ladies have done," said Warm Springs Head Start Director, Nancy Seylcr. "And we thank their families for understanding when they stayed up late writing papers or drove in snow to attend night classes or were sitting in classrooms during the hot summer instead of at Bar-B-Qucs or powwows." All four Warm Springs community people are employed by the Head Start Program. Warm Springs is also boasting about the number of staff from the Early Childhood Education Center involved in the Child Development Associates degree program, a national certification program that identifies competence in thirteen areas required for quality child care and early education services. Shirelle Thomas, Althca Henry, Jamcy Smith and Sylvia McCabe have completed all course work for their CDA working with children three to five years of age. Following an assessment by the national office representatives sometime this summer, they will become certified Child Development Associates. "Their families deserve stars for encouraging these students in their efforts," said Education Coordinator Tryna Muilcnberg who helped Fourth grade honored with ceremony "V- ,-wr CJ ' 1 i 1 U if V A O "71 ; , f j s . 1 i 1 organize classes and acted as a mentor for the CDA candidates. Two other Head Start employees, Patsy Lenbcck and Joni David, will complete their CDA programs early next year. Several other staff serving children under three have also completed CDA courses this year beginning their certification programs. "Gcri Lillie and Maria Minthorn hope to receive their Infant Toddler CDA certificates by the end of the summer," said Lola Trimble, the Infant Center Coordinator. "Gcri and Maria will be the first two staff at Warm Springs to have the Infant Center CDA certification." Two more staff hope to complete the infant Toddler CDA next year. "In addition to complimenting their efforts, I also want to thank their team mates who were there for them and the children they work with while they were in Bend taking classes," noted their supervisor. "None of thiscould have happened without the commitment of the Tribe and the department," said Early Childhood Education director, Julie Quaid. Head Start is more than 30 years old in Warm Springs and has supported teacher education from the beginning. The Early Childhood Education Center includes Head Start, the infant center and a school age program and is certified to serve 420 children. "Perhaps most important is the increased opportunities to young children each day that well-trained staff provide in greater nurturing, excitement about learning and encouraging children to be the best that they can be." Seeing their teachers go to school and earn degrees well beyond high school may encourage a three year old today to become a Ph.D. student in the years ahead. Inspiring such educational goals in others will cause more shouts and celebrations for future Warm Springs graduates. The four who graduated on June 14th can be expected to join in those future celebrations. Graduates recognized Following is a list of the 1995-96 graduates.
