Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo Spilyay Tymoo Sports iir,"i:1'Vi-iiir 8May23, 1996 Managing Olympic boxing team keeps Smith busy by Dan Lawrence The USA Olympic boxing team was in Bend training from May 7 to 15 at which time they traveled to Portland for a bout with Germany on May 17. Managing the 1 996 USA Olympic boxing team is tribal member Gerald Smith. As manger Smith is responsible for arranging transportation, uniforms, housing, meals, event tickets for family members, attending technical meetings and assuring that all participants have proper accreditation. Smith must also arrive at boxing sites one day before the team arrives and wait until the last athlete leaves the site. Gerald is very pleased and excited to be chosen team leader of US A Olympic boxing team. Smith feels the most important part of his job is to make sure everything dealing with the administrative part was done, so boxers can "concentrate on boxing and the coaches can concentrate on teaching." Gerald started boxing when he was 9 and continued until age 1 2. He took a five-years respite from the sport and started back into boxing when he was 19 while attending Portland State University. Smith boxed under the tutelage of Dick Wagner (who twice fought Floyd Patterson). Also at that time Smith got his first experience at managing boxers and found he enjoyed it. From 1986 to 1992, Gerald was president of the USA Boxing Assocation of Oregon. In 1994 Gerald was selected to be team manager for the John Hancock 1995 Pan American trials held in Portland. At the annual USA Boxing Inc. meeting held in San Jose, California, it was announced that Smith was selected as the 1996 Olympic learn Manager for the Olympics held in Atlanta GA, July 20 to August 4 1996. As a boxing team manager, ex-president of the USA Boxing Assocition, Gerald has traveled to many parts of the world and has met many famous amateur and professional boxers. In 1990 he coached the USA team that As team manager, , Gerald Smith has been a "great asset to the Olympic team and takes a lot of pressure away from the coaches and boxers." Coach Al Mitchell went to Halifax, Nova Scotia for the USA vs Canada duel match. In 1992 he went to Warsaw for the USA vs PolandIreland duel. On January 30 through Febuary "Best" MHS softball team shooting for state playoffs Seasoned softball coach Dick Souers says, "This is the best team I have coached in the twelve years I have coached at Madras Senior High School." With an overall record of 20-5 and a league mark of 1 4-2, Coach Souers feels his team will go far in the upcomi ng state tournament if they qualify. They first must survive the league playoffs which started, May 16 at MHS field. Coach Souers feels his team will be strong the next couple of years with only two seniors, two juniors and 12 sophomores. f;- ii Shasta Smith pitching in league playoff game vs Estacada May, 16. t. Gerald admits "I love everything about my involvement in boxing, from the conditioning, metal preparation, philosophy, up to the competitions. A boxer does not have to be a world champion to make it all worthwhile. Back in 1992 my goal was to work in an adminstrative position at the 1996 Olympics. My dream came true sooner then I thought. What started out as away to repay boxing fourteen years ago and seeing what I have accomplished, makes me feel great." Gerald said one of the best compliments he recievedl was in 1990, at the Goodwill ' Games, when USA coach R o s a v e 1 1 Sanders said that Gerald had "everything taken care of." Gerald also had compliments from this year's Olympic staff. USA Coach Al Mitchell stated that Gerald "was a great asset to the Olympic team and takes alot of pressure away from the coaches and boxers." A trainer of the USA team Local girls on the team are Ardis Smith, daughter of Darrell and Dawn Smith, starting at second and Shasta Smith, daughter of Frank and Shirley Smith, pitching with a record of 7-1. Shasta's only loss was to Mt. Veiw, a 4A school. Due to an off-field injury, Jessie Esquiro is not playing but usually starts at third. Coach Souers stated with a big sophomore class, his team has had alot of experience playing together. He also adds that with "strong pitching and good hitting" his team will be tough to beat. m. :. . . . imy - r Vf?
