He is also Director of the Native American Program at Central Oregon Community College to help Native American students adjust to COCC. Dye received his Masters degree at Western Washington University and now teaches American Indian Literature and writing courses at COCC. He will teach three courses on Northwest Indian Literature this winter here in Warm Springs. This year marked the third year Dye taught developmental English for Summer Bridgcin Warm Springs. His goal is to get some of these Summer Bridge students to come back to teach this class. Summer Bridge began in 1992, and was created by Geoff Bury and Julie Quaid. Students going tocollcge ore required to take this course to make sure they are ready for college before they arc sent. Students learn developmental math and English that are actual college classes. They learn study habits, demands of college life and just figure out what college is going to be like. Geoff Bury instructs math. Ten students attended the 1995 Summer Bridge classes. "Last year ten finished Summer Bridge classes, eight of them went to college and eight succeeded at college," Dye said proudly. Last year Dye, with the help of Maury Jimincz, got the COCC Native American Program going again. After years without the program, Dye decided to ask about starting it up again and college officials appointed him Director of the Program. This program is once again available to help Native American students adjust to COCC, and life in Bend, to help with travel, scholarships, academic advising and cultural activities. This year the Native American Program held their Spring Salmon Festival in May with the help of Tribal Council. He received help from Wendell Jim and Pierson Mitchell and guest speaker Evaline Patt from the Warm Springs Education Committee. Dye would like to commend students who attended the 1995 Summer Bridge classes for working hard and completing Summer Bridge and beginning their college careers. $ f'LJ fa fiilt -V u M : HI 3 Mb -T m 4 WW v p. 7t 3?f it V Y i- Summer Bridge graduates are ready for college. To the editor, We really wanted the Culture Camp Sapsiquat to last longer. We could have learned more and finished my yarn bag. Even if it was hot we got treats (popsicles) the food was good, the subjects well selected. We camped one night. . Charlotte Herkshan was real good to all of us too. She reminds us of our grandma Neda Wesley. Captain was a lot of help in teaching us using kid language. Lots of times teachers used language too difficult for us. Especially to my lil brothers Curtiss and Theodore. Our grandma said Indian language is important. We think so too. Anyway, we just want to say thank you to all the staff Char, Myra, captain, Phyllis, Enie, Arlita, Grandma Mary Ann Meanus, Pierson, Grandmas Neda and Charlotte S. Can't wait for next year.
