Warm Springs, Oregon SpilyayTymoo Spilyay Tmoo Sports "Wi Tom Cat Logging beats Pendleton, OR Spikers participate in Rodney Mitchell Memorial The Eagle Spirits first annual 6' and Under plus 1 hosted 1 1 teams on January 6, 7 and 8, 1995. With the snow falling, it was a very good turn ut. TomCat Logging beat Pendleton to claim the Championship jackets. The Oregon Travellers came in third with the host team, Eagle Spririts taking fourth. Montana took the sportspmanship t-shirts home with them after being beat out in two. Other teams that participated were: Timberwolvcs (Janice Gilbert-Gunshows); Wildcats (Luther Clements); Game Boys (Leo Hellon); Chiloquin, Culver and Ma dras. The other awards presented are as follows: Most 3-point jacket went to Todd Wagonblast from the Tom Cats after a shootout was complete be- i , hi f 3 . S tKSM I twccnLittlcfoodEllcnwoodwhoticd for the award. They both had 1 1 3 poinlers during the tournament. High Scorer went to Todd Wagonblast with the high score for one game of 35 points. Also he cinched the MVP jacket along with the Allstar award. Mr. Defense went to David Daniels of Tom Cat Logging. Mr. Rebound went to Buck Jones of Pendleton. Mr. Hustle went to Antonio Scott of the Oregon Travelers. All stars are as follows: Eagle Spirts-Andy Leonard and Shane Rivera, Timberwolvcs Jamie Jim, Wildcats-Jerome Davis, Pendleton-Seymore Ruben, Buck Jones and Antone Fuentes, ORTrav-elers-TJ Bolton and Orlando Vance, TomCat Logging walked away with three Allstars, Ryan Sams, David Daniels and Todd Wagonblast. A special award went to Art Mitchell whom was honored with an honor song sung by Big Rat Suppah, Chas Mitchell, Trey Leonard, Max Mitchell and Carlos Calica. Missy David-Levi Taylor. Six teams participated in the Rodney Mitchell Memorial volleyball tournament last Saturday. The morning began with round-robin action to determine placing on the bracket. The results were as follows: the host team, Tribes I were the 1995 champions. They defeated the Umatilla Tribes of Pendleton. Third place was awarded to No , Fear of the Full Gospel Church. . Tribes II placed fourth followed by Luane's Team and The Rooks. The sportsmanship award was irl presented to Luane's Team. All-stars for the tournament were; Greg Jackson and Sharon ' Katchia from The Rooks, Orvie Danzuka, Luane Foltz of Luane's Team, Sky Katchia, Hulk Katchia ( and Bobbie Calica of Tribes II, Bruce, Kathy and Tim Williams of No Fear, Glo Jim, Patty Jim and Lester Spencer of Umatilla, Deanie Smith, Juliane Smith, Carol Miller, Chet Van Pelt, . Carlos Calica, and Max Mitchell from Tribes I. A.J. of Pendleton was awarded Mr. Hustle and Bobbie Calica of Tribes II was Ms. Hustle. Smith plays basketball on JV and Varsity teams Golden Gloves boxing championships set I TKa ioo r, nA n . .... Shasta Smith, plays an unusual part in the MHS girls basketball program she holds positions on the varsity and junior varsity teams. This in itself, is an accomplishment, add the fact that Shasta is a freshman, and you've got a great accomplishment. Smith has been playing basketball since she was in the third grade. She likes basketball because it is fun, nn -i f Si1- i " ! V o o Shasta Smith, Varsity and JV basketball team member. exciting, entertaining and competitive. Smith will try out for the team to play basketball until she is a senior in high school and after that when she goes to college. Smith played for Ronnie Suppah's team, Lady Vols, for about four years, then played for the Columbia River Bears, coached by Foster Kalama, for one year. Smith said she was surprised that she was chosen to play on JV and Varsity Basketball team for the high school. She feels good about making the team and feels a sense of accomplishment for the many years she has played basketball. Smith does not let it affect her education, she gets As and Bs in all herclasses. She likes English because it's easy and she likes to write. Her father and her older brother have both played basketball. Smith has a six-year-old sister, Shayla, who would like to follow in her footsteps and play basketball. Shayla said that she was going to be better than her big sister. Smith's father is Frank Smith, "Footer," who is a the Lieutenant of Corrections for the Police Department. Her mother is Shirley Smith, who is a CNA at the Health & Wellness Center. Smith's mother was born in Arizona, but is enrolled in Ft. Peck. Her paternal grandparents are Claude Smith and the lato Victoria Smith, both from Warm Springs. Her maternal grandmother, Marie Eder, is from Arizona, and her maternal grandfather is the late Sweed Eder from Ft. Peck Reservation in Montana. Smith has also participated in Cross Country at Madras High School this school year. When she was a little girl she Indian danced and played T-Ball and Softball, and today she still enjoys playing softball during the summer months and going to powwows to watch the dancing. The 1995, Oregon Golden Glove Boxing championships are scheduled for Friday, January 27th, starting at 7:30 P. m. for the elimination's and the finals on Saturday, January 28th, starting at 7:30: P.M. The boxing championships will be held in the Portland Conference Center, on 1020, NE 3rd Ave. Just north of Oregon Convention Center of Union Avenue, or Martin Luther , King Blvd. Open Class Amateur Boxers from throughout the Western States and Canadian Provinces will be showing their talent and testing their skill in this classic event. All with a focus on advancement to the National Tourney scheduled Warm Springs Forest Product Industries Timberwolves will host a teen boys 14 and under basketball tournament at the Warm Springs Community Center. Numerous classes for are avail able for competitors, including high school age, and for men and women of all ages. Weigh-in will be held Friday, January 27 at the Mazama Gym at COCC from 5 to 9 p.m. For further information, contact Shannon Heany at 385-93 14 in Bend. Fourth annual Cougars youth on tap The Warm Springs Nations Cougars Youth Boy 's Basketball team presents the 4th Annual Boys and Girls 12 Years and Younger Youth Basketball Tournament (10 boys teams and 8 girls), January 27-29, 1995, at the Warm Springs Community Center.
