Walter Langnese III Judge, Warm Springs Tribal Court a" a. a.;i STATE Burn hot fires to reduce air pollution Burning wood for home heating is the fastest growing source of air pol lution in Oregon. How can you help? Burn dry, seasoned wood. Dry wood bums cleaner and you get more heat than from unseasoned wood. Cure split wood by raising it off the ground and covering it Cut it early in the spring or summer so it can dry by winter.. Build small fires, but hot and rcstoke. Small fires with plenty of oxygen burn cleanest. If you need to stoke up your fire, burn it briskly for 30 minutes. Then damp it down, but not too much. Check your stack and clean your chimney. A small amount of smoke from your chimney means you have a hot fire. Of course, a clean chimney also means greater fire safety. Help prevent air pollution. Avoid stove use on poor air quality days if you have another heat source. You can help improve our Central Oregon air quality and still reduce your home heating costs. Job skills, good attitude key to success in business world To the Editor, My name is Amos Switzler, Jr., and I feel I am dedicated to the best interests of the Tribes, while pursu ing my own goals. I have never really wanted to work for anyone else, and I enjoy being the boss of my own business. I find that I am in better position now to help those who need help. Runners finish in 24 hours To the editor, The Butte To Bay Relay was held on October 9 & 10, 1992. The run is 151 miles, starts at Crcswcll, Oregon and ends at Newport, Oregon. This year, we had a few problems, runners getting lost (not the vans this time!) and some confusion on the course, but we all came through and finished in a lime of 24 hours, 10 minutes. The team members this year were: Terry Squicmphcn (Captain), Gladys Squicmphen, Val Squicmphcn, Joanie Dittcntholcr, Linda Harrison, Christine Burncll, Lana Shike, Andy Leonard, Alfred Eyle, Richard Harrington and Ken Uphoff. Every one did real well, but Terry, Alfred and Christine did especially well, since they had to run 4 legs apiece (we were short one runner). Way to go! Special thanks goes out to our sponsors: Mickey Brunoe Logging and Warm Springs Forest Products. We couldn't have done it without you! Big thank you to Earl & Rita Squicmphcn for the use of their van and to those runners who were not able to make the run (they were there, T IK Happy 13th Birthday Sadie Sam October 30, 1979 Love you "Babes" From, Mom, Dad, Tracy, Jr., Thomas, Elsie, Neda, Jeleah Happy Birthday Sadie Love from, Grandma Eliza, Lillie, Albert, Eliza, Tony, Wolfman, Kela Happy Birthday Dennis! And, for the last 10 or 12 years, I've listened to complaints from all that I have talked to. The way old management was setup, very little could be done toright the policy. Tribal Council refused to act or to even listen at that time. The whole operation was going down the tube, as we all could testify in spirit). They missed out on a lot of fun! Hope you can makeitnextycar! Special thanks to Terry & Gladys for the great looking team sweatshirts! Also, congratulations to the other teams that participated and especially to the other two from Warm Springs: Warm Springs Nation Road Runners and the men's team - Hot Sticks?! The equipment and machinery were poorly repaired and constantly needed to be taken out of service until repaired again. Attitudes and morale was shot and, in the four times I worked for WSFPI, it was always the same: Alcohol and drug abuse coupled with tardiness and absenteeism, intentional break downs, sloppy job performance and a total disregard for the safety of other workers. We all thought that if we ever had the chance, we'd do whatever we could to eliminate all this. Th is chance came at a great cost to the Tribes. The Tribes lost a total of $10 million in 1990 and 1991 before somebody finally sat up and took notice. I believe under ordinary con ditions, with ordinary people, this company should have folded. We never gave a thought to that, rather, they formed a group of people who rose to the challenge and made known all the complaints heard through the last decade. These complaints were valid, and as much as the consultants tried to brush aside these complaints as petty Happy Birthday DAD! Please remember these safety tips when you take your child trick or treating. KEEP COSTUMES SIMPLE TO HELP YOUR CHILD AVOID TRIPPING. USE FACE PAINTS, NOT MASKS, TO AVOID BLOCKING YOUR CHILD'S VISION. HAVE YOUR CHILD USE A FLASHLIGHT IF GOING OUT AT NIGHT TELL YOUR CHILD TO WALK, NOT RUN AND TO BE CAREFUL CROSSING STREETS. Tribal members started to have meetings with different people who have direct access to Tribal Council ears. The Indian people were being: heard and appreciating it. All the years of frustration were now being released. As a result, production in creased, beyond anything before. Indian people trained far beyond anything before. And, where we were losing money one year ago, today we are making money, still in the red, but making money. And that's the name of the game, in any business. We can now realized future projects because of it It would have been nice if all Indian people were satisfied with the results for all the effort put forth by those concerned about the Tribes as a whole.
