A. Yes, leave it there. The black
plastic doesn’t save energy, but
it is; im portant. I t’S a vapor b a r-

orating from the soil. If w ater
eyaporates into the crawl space,
ro t can form in the wood and
mildew can grow inside the house.
A vapor barrier in the crawl
space is especially im portant
when the floor is insulated. The
vapor barrier should be black;
polyethylene, 6 mils thick. Make
sure that sheets overlap by 12
inches where they ‘c ome t ogether
and th a t they extend all the way
to the foundation footings. Weight
the sheets dow n w ith rocks or
bricks.
