' T he tourney drew team s from H erm isto n , C olum bia, H ood R iver and Jefferson C ounty for som e good softball games. Jef ferson C ounty the host team won tw o and lost tw o in som e stiff com petition, first starting out w ith a big win over R ed m ond and w inning a close game with H ood River in extra innings 5-4. T his advanced them on to meet C olum bia in their third gam e, and the second gam e fo r C olum bia. P erhaps a little tired and w eary after tw o games, .especially the tough game w ith H ood R iver, w here the girls put "extra effort out to Win. T h at gam e to o k a lot o f spunk out of the JC girls by the tim e they • faced the strong C olum bia team. The gam e was pretty close in th e earlier p a rt b ut a couple o f errors burned the JC team giv ing C olum bia a big lift in spirit and they m anaged to get a few 1 runs hom e to give them ajgood lead and the JC girls just couldn’t p u t an ything together to get back in the game and C olum bia went bn to win putting JC in the losers bracket. W ith the double elim ination H ood R iver was on the ram page once again w ith a win over H erm iston, w hich pitted them again stJefL C o. once again on the long way around tow ard th e c h a m p io n s h ip . T h e se c o n d m eeting betw een the tw o team s H ood R iver came o ut stronger th an usual an d were able to contain the Jeff. Co. girls fo r, the victory in a gam e at 8 a.m . on S aturday, to elim inate the Jeff. Co. girls from fu rth er eom- petiton. H ood R iver advanced on to the cham pionship game where they fell to C olum bia for the cham pionship on Sunday m orning. At, tim es the Jefferson Co. girls show ed real wefl b u t the pressure was ju st to o great for them . C olum bia will advance on to the state to u rn am en t in P o rtlan d , later on in the m onth. In the M ajo r League fo r the younger girls the Jefferson Co. girls opened to u rn am en t play against H ood River, who was last years cham ps, and always have a strong team each year. Jefferson County all-stars to play In District tourney The Jefferson C ounty m ajor league A ll-Stars enter district play at The Dalles, July 17, against Sisters, Oregon. The boys have been working out fo r the past couple of weeks and are playing their gam e at 3:30. T here have been no indi cations as just how well the boys are prepared. The game with the Sisters team should be a good tough one fo r the Jeff. Co boys. Should they win this game they will meet D eschutes, of the M aupin-Tygh Valley area, a t 10:30 the following day. R hoan was selected to go to E urope to attend the W arner Pacific Col lege B asketball C am p and to to u r the fabulous land; R h o an stated th at -she was quite happy she had been one o f the twelve people to be selected to attend the cam p, and th at she had literally fallen in love with Europe. Participants of the cam p spent two weeks, Ju n e 21 to July 5, learning th e lifestyles, foods (w hich R hoan said was good— and perhaps better th an th a t in the U.S. because there are no K ing, P a m M u rd e rs, M a r ty S c h m ith , J e n n i f e r B e c k e r, M a riss a C o e n h a v o r, C o ach A ndy L eonard and M anager Bob King. u Rat Pack ends season with nine win-no loss “T h e R at Pack players had a sucessful season because they were willing to learn, played good team ball and had good sportsm anship,” stated coach T ony “ Big R a t” Suppah. The team had a nine Win-no loss season fo r 1985. S uppah went on to say team mem bers received great support from their parents and that seems to m ake a trem endous differ ence in the perform ance of the players. It was through the back ing o f th e parents th a t m ade if possible for the players to m ake each practice and gam e on time, said Suppah. A ssisting S u p p ah w ith the R a t Pack were M erci Suppah, m anager an d Everett Miller, assistant coach. T-Ball teams cohsist of players between the ages of five and seven. In the Jefferson C ounty T- Ball league there a re seven tea ms which consist of the B at Pack, W arm Springs Fire and Safety, W arm Springs Stingers, M ad ras Reds, M adras Sprouts, C uL ver O range and C ulver Blue. The league began M ay 28 and p ut them completely out of fur ther competition. Team members for the Jefferson C ounty team were L a u ra M iller, R achelle Beetles, Shirley Allen, Becky S oliz. T here were sh o rt stops in sm all villages along tlie way, and th a t’s where R h o an learned m ost o f w hat she did. There were “castles”, and pretty houses, som e surrounded by beautiful flowers. The people in E urope are “ open and free”, m eaning not all clothing is w orn at the sam e time. N udist beaches are not ah uncom m on sight. W hen asked if R h o an liked her stay in E urope, she replied, “I loved it, it was great. She plans to to play ón the all-star AA Oregon enter Linn-B enton C om m unity girls’ basketball team. Shike and College in A lbany, Oregon. team m ate A shley T h o rp e , M adras, were selected to partic ipate in the two-gam e play be tween the East and W est divi sions. Both Shike and T horpe had played varsity basketball for M adras High S chool during the 11985 season. They were both selected for the all-state, all-star team. The tw o games were played at L) Lane C om m unity College in Eugene, Ju n e 21 and 2) The Dalles High School, Ju n e 22, The team s split wins, with each winning one game. Shike was praised by her high school coach, Bonnie Souers, as being “ the best g u ard -to ever pass th ro u g h M a d ra s H igh School. ” D uring her senior year she attem pted 200 Shots from the field and ended w ith a .640 accuracy. H er coach credits her with being the “play m aker guard for the M adras varsity for four years” and assisting the W hite Buffaloes in getting to th e state tournam ent three years. A ccording to Souers, she has trem en d o u s defensive skills, court sense and ball handling skills. The 575* Shike earned an average o f 13 points per game Lana Shike with three assists per game.
