Bend Lava Bears edge Buffs The Madras White Buffaloes dropped their opening football game to the Bend Lava Bears on the Bears home field 20-19. The game dominated by the Buffaloes statistic wise let victory slip away from some early season misjudgments and broken plays giving the breaks to the Lava Bears. A kickoff run back for the Lava Bears hurt the Buff’s giving Bend their first score. In the effort for the extra point try the Buff defense rose up to block the kick. It was the Bend aerial attack that really proved costly to the Buff’s as the Lava Bears connected on two TD strikes in the second half and a two-point conversion also by a pass giving them the winning margin. Scott Williams did a great job for the Buff’s calling signals and running the option well by setting up the first touchdown and scoring two himself. Hard running by Anthony Davis and Spud Smith gave the Buffs the big punch they needed in that department. The kicking game was the weak point for the Buffs as they kicked one, missed one and had one blocked. It was a whole team effort that kept the Buffs in the game. Up front efforts from Hobo Patt, Anson Begay and Cy Jim adding key plays defensively.. With just four returnees from last year the team is building well and have depth in each position as proven by the s ta tis tic s w here M a d ra s o u tclassed th e ir o p p o n e t e x e c p t fo r th e p a ssin g department. The Buffaloes had 14 first downs to 6 for Bend, compiled 299 yards rushing compared to 11 for Bend. In the passing game the weak point the Buffs had 7 yards to Bends 166. Total yardage Madras had 306 to 177 for Bend. The Buffs will be home for their next outing September 16, as they host Chemawa from Salem. Coach Chester said that he has no information on Chemawa, however they did cancel their first game. The Varsity, JV and freshman teams have a total of 74 members. IV.S.ers enter T.V. rodeo Local cowboys, barrel racers and race horsemen participated in the annual Wasco County Fair and Rodeo in Tygh Valley, August 27-28, 1983. C lim b in g a b o a r d to p Sombrero rodeo stock in the saddle bronc event were Joe Scott and Terry Squiemphen. Both cowboys made a good effort on the rough stock neither placed, Raym ond Hurtado hung tough, on one of the tough bulls of the string, however he didn’t hang on long enough as he was bucked off just before the whistle. C elia B erry, S tep h en ie Frank and Faye Hurtado made a good run at the barrels in the girls barrel racing event while LeRoy Scott, Evans Spino, Toba Scott were running horses on the track adding thrills in the race department. This year the turn out was Spilyay Tym oo p h o to b y MiUer not as good as usual but the Celia Berry in the girls barrel race during the Wasco County Fair, thrills were there. August 27-28, 1983.
