e 6 February 12,1982 Spilyay Tymoo Local hoopsters participate ..... , Spilyay Tymoo - SPORTS Mini-Marathon Update in tourneys by Julie Mitchell Warm Springs at Taholah The Oregon Travelers and Warm Springs Magpies Men’s basketball teams returned from T a h o la h d e fe a te d a n d disappointed. The January 30- 31 d o u b le e lim in a tio n tournament was taken by the host team, handing White Swan a second place finish. D ora’s Smoke Shop walked away with third place and the Artie Knights settled for fourth. Squaxin Island handed the Travelers a loss in the first round, matching them against a once unbeatable Colville team. The Travelers eliminated Colville, beating them by 10 points. LaConner outscored the Travelers by 12 in their final game of the tournament. Warm Springers playing in Taholah were Owen Danzuka, Bernie Earl, Willie Stacona, John Katchia, Isaac Mitchell. Simon Kalama and Farley Eaglespeaker. The Travelers’ r o s te r o u tn u m b e r e d ' th e Magpies by seven, as only'two players were able to make game time, yet the Magpies managed to field a team for three games. Many entry blanks have been sent out with requests for more continuously coming in. This y ear’s m arathon is working up to be a big one. Local merchants are sharing in this com m unity event sponsored by the Simnasho.. School 4-H “Discovery” Club by contributing merchandise to be raffled off or by donating money. So far these people have donated:- Miller Ford, A hern’s M arket, T u rn e r’s V ariety, Q uality Sounds, Olsen’s Saddle Shop, Wong’s Restaurant, Mode O Day, Cable Car Restaurant and Inter-Tribal Sports. Andrew D avid has contributed a pendleton blanket to be given to the oldest visiting male runner. Only two bussinesses have adamantly refused to donate to the Mini-Marathon and those two are Western Auto and Guy Davis Chevrolet. Because of the help from many of the local merchants m a n y of the events in Warm Springs are enjoyable for the community’s residents. The run is scheduled for March 6 and includes three runs; a 14.5 mile run, a 6 mile run and a 3 .mile run. The divisions include: Men and women 14.5 and 6 mile runs; 13. and under, 14-18, 19- 29, 30-39, 40 and over and wheelchair. The 3 mile run is a “Run for Fun.” Early registration fee is $5.00 for all races. Cost will be $7.00 after the February 28 deadline. Registration, absolutely, closes at 11:30 a.m. March 6, the day of the race. All races start at 1:00 p.m. Runners will be transported to starting points. The last bus will leave the village at 12:00 noon. All runners will receive a 4th A n n u a l S im n ash o M ini- Marathon T-shirt, a swim pass for Kah-Nee-Ta pool and a drawing ticket towards a chance at many prizes. Toppenish basketball tourney GOING FOR THE V^ELS—TheByronPattMemorialRopingheldattheMadrasFairgroundson February 6 was “one great success” according to a member o f thePatt family. The roping which was sponsored by local roping promoter, Bill Walker, drew ropers from all over the Northwest. The results o f the roping at this time were unavailable but will appear m the next issue o f the Spilyay. vy r i, Spilyay Tymoo photo by Leno The Tygh Valley Studs tra v e le d to T o p p e n is h , Washington to participate in a b a s k e tb a ll to u rn a m e n t sponsored by Clyde Wallahee’s Reservation Spirits on Feb. 5- 6, 1982. The Studs lost out fourth place to the Wapato Hawks, The Satus Cowboys took first place. The team’s efforts, however, won them the sportsm anship award, and Joseph Henry brought home an all-star T-shirt. At the same time, the younger generation p a rt icipated in an eight year and under tournament sponsored by White Swan Thunder Chicks. The Warm Springs team (who wish to be called the Studs because of their protege team the Tygh Valley Studs) participated in their first basketball game and because of t h e ir e f f o r t s , w on th e Sportsmanship trophy, which was a beautiful plaque. Alex Tufti and Mare Arthur also won all-star T-shirts. The team consists of 9 members, ages four to seven years; they are Alex Tufti, Jolene Hintsula, Jason Hintsula, Marc Arthur, James Arthur, Shane Henry, Reuben Henry, Jr. all of Warm Springs, and Renae George and William Henry of The D a lle s .
